Profile bio

About Oshan Gunathilake

I am a Peace Education and Alternative Development practitioner from Sri Lanka with experience in the areas of peacebuilding, transformative education and community development fields in the Asia-Pacific. My interests fall in the intersections of nonviolence, decolonization, restorative practice and Community-based Solutions. I am a strong believer in the alternatives for existing structures and practices and contribute to the areas of alternative development concepts such as “Buen Vivir” and alternative justice based on indigenous restorative practices and transformative empowerment approaches similar to Global Citizenship Education (GCED). I advocate for sustainable educational reforms that build on sustainable social engagement through critical empowerment. As a development practitioner, educator and facilitative trainer in the areas of peace and development, I have experience collaborating with diverse private, government, intergovernmental and community-based stakeholders from local and global levels. I have years of experience as a youth advocate for peace, human rights and liberty with local and global youth communities alongside both private and government counterparts, in the areas of preventing violent extremism and hate speech, media literacy, peacebuilding, transitional justice and reconciliation.Throughout the last year or so, I have changed my perspectives and values a lot in my travels to Central America - especially Costa Rica, Home of UPEACE - and the amazing personalities I met. Right now, I am a wanderer in the wonder of Peace Education (not education for Peacebuilding specifically), where I explore the ideas of decolonization, abolition and restoration of educational practices, peacebuilding, development and justice in our communities and GloCal settings. Furthermore, I am a practitioner of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Citizenship Education (GCED) through the application of Regenerative Leadership, Sustainable Advocacy and principles/ strategic nonviolence for Resistance to People Power. In my work, you can always find traces of participatory/ social learning, transformative action, critical thinking, self-reflective action, non-linear designs and other mystics and wonders embedded in the ancestral indigenous ways we have replaced with more Western/ Eurocentric ways due to the colonial impact. However, the journey continues and this too is susceptible to change. Let's check back in a couple of years (06/2023).

Listed skills include Video Production, Graphic Design, Motion Graphics, Marketing, and 27 others.

We have UNSCR 2419 and 2535, an independent progress study on youth and peace and security - The Missing Peace (2018) and the UN Secretary General's first global report on YPS (2020). More than 70 agencies are leading and shaping global policy and practices around YPS through the Global Coalition on Youth, Peace & Security (GCYPS).
