Developed software tools for refinement of X-ray structures of protein ligand complexes, ligand fitting and analysis:* BUSTER refinement program solved optimization performance problems. Improved the geometry function used. Developed new approach to NCS restraints that is user friendly (-autoncs). Introduced direct use of weighted quantum chemical or force field energy for ligands in refinement,* Buster-report analysis tool. This is a tool to provide clear, short reports of how a BUSTER run has proceeded, and an analysis of the final result using useful tools like Mogul and MolProbity. * Ligand fitting. Lead developer for Rhofit ligand fitter. This is a flexible ligand fitter that is particularly good for macrocycles.* Grade restraint generator. Lead developer. Wrote Grade Web Server to allow easy access to Grade.

Initial work was to help set up and run the MRC-funded Bioinformatics and Structural Biology Project. This provided the computational infrastructure and research-support for bioinformatics and structural biology across the University. Taught in BSc Biochemistry and Biological Sciences Programs. Contributed to development of BSc Bioinformatics degree. Successfully supervised 4 PhD students and a PDRA. Contributed to 25+ publications. Main research interests design and analysis of chemically modified proteins to enable photocontrol.

Independent Fellowship that got me started as an Academic, continue work on HOLE and developed methods for the simulation of conformational transitions in proteins.

Working with Prof Julia M. Goodfellow and Prof Bonnie Wallace on gramicidin structure/function. Wrote the HOLE program for the analysis of the pore dimensions of ion channel models.
