Oversee assessment, retention, curriculum and general coordination of the journalism program within the Communication Department.

Named the 2017 Journalism Educator of the Year by the Society of Professional Journalists, Western Washington Pro Chapter.Teach foundational journalism courses, including multiplatform journalism, community journalism and journalism in a diverse society. Other courses include Representing Latinidad, which explores media representation of Mexican Americans and other Latinxs. I am also an associate director of the Center for Communication, Difference and Equity, established in Spring 2015.

Taught journalism courses and advised the student news outlet, The Clipper. Courses included Introduction to News Writing, Copy Editing, Media Writing, Introduction to Mass Media, Newspaper Production, and Multimedia Journalism. I also developed and taught Introduction to Chicano/Mexican-American Culture. Developed an open-source media literacy course as part of a Washington state grant. Developed policy to protect student media as a public forum. Board of Trustees adopted policy in 2007. Awards include: George Shuh Award for Outstanding Faculty, 2007; You Made a Difference Award, 2010; an International Students Employee of the Year Award, 2012; Faculty of the Year, Associated Students Award, 2012-13.

• Assistant Features Editor (Fall 2003-Spring 2005) Oversaw five reporters and a columnist. Generated, directed, edited daily and enterprise projects. Developed consumer-coverage plan. Recipient of 2004 American Association of Sunday and Features Editors fellowship. Lead editor of consumer-news initiative, which won first place in Debby Lowman Award for Distinguished Reporting of Consumer Affairs in 2005. Co-chair of committee that devised the first plagiarism policy at The Seattle Times.• Politics Editor (Spring 2002-Fall 2003) Oversaw six reporters in Olympia, D.C. and Seattle. Generated, directed, edited daily and enterprise projects. Planned and directed 2002 election coverage. Planned and directed publication of two voter guides. Ran coverage of two legislative sessions. Edited an enterprise series on taxes. • Environment/ Energy Editor (Winter 1999-Spring 2002) Oversaw six reporters in Seattle, Portland and D.C. Generated, directed, edited daily and enterprise coverage. Major stories included Makah whale hunt; Bellingham pipeline explosion; Enron-era energy shortage and fallout; migrant-worker issues in Eastern Washington, and deadly Thirtymile forest fire near Winthrop, Washington.

Acquired and edited manuscripts in Chicano fiction, culture, literary criticism and memoir, including The Circuit by Francisco Jiménez.

Wrote a column as part of the People of Color series. Topics related to but were not limited to topics in Mexican American/Chicano culture and politics.

News editor over team of reporters covering city and county politics, including coverage of suburbs, ethnic diversity, race and religion.

Learned the book publishing industry as part of a fellowship that turned into a full-time acquisitions position. Job responsibilities included building a list in Chicano studies and literature.
