As co-director of Boukje.com (visit www.boukje.com for a description of the company) I am involved in initiating, writing and participating in various European and national research proposals, as well as strategic research development. The topics of the proposals that we work on vary considerably: from materials science to sustainable architecture and urban planning, as well as a lot of topics in-between those two extremes. Within the company, I am involved in activities such as concept development, strategic consultancy and bringing potential project partners together.

As landscape/urban designer and (spatial) strategist I facilitate the formation and growth of new ideas within design processes. My role is to safeguard the coherency of products, the development of a versatile storyline and its accompanying visualisation and textual underpinning. My interest lies in investigating the interaction between natural systems and urban systems, as well as in deepening the methodological versatility of spatial design approaches. With societal and climatological problems increasing in complexity, and (spatial) design being recognised as an effective instrument to address them, the role of designers and the demands posed on them are about to change radically. All the more reason to innovate and invent our discipline in a new and different way!

The PhD research "Creating Knowledge Through Architectural Design" demonstrates how spatial design – as practiced in design disciplines like architecture, urban design and landscape architecture – is a methodologically effective and epistemically reliable approach for solving multidimensional problems. The paradigm multidimensional problem used as casus for this demonstration is achieving urban sustainability. The overall approach is to conduct design experiments for two case study areas, thereby demonstrating the postulated efficacy of spatial design. The two cases are Hellersdorf-Süd in Berlin (DE) and Pendrecht/Zuidwijk in Rotterdam (NL).

My function at BTL Advies (now Idverde) involved designing of various public spaces such as streets, parks, squares etc., as well as developing and writing development plans.
