In the early 1990’s, I prototyped a system that integrated many sorts of heterogeneous data and computational methods relevant to the Human Genome Project. The Integrated Genomic Database (IGD) was considered a pioneering work in large-scale rule-based information integration; it grew into an international collaboration and was funded by the European Commission.

Protein Data Bank is a world-global repository of experimentally determined protein and nucleic acid structures. I designed a formal rule-based system, the first one to completely specify the grammar and constraints of PDB structural files, their validation and misc. transformations; and I managed the corresponding software development project. I was Principal Investigator of the Next Generation Protein Data Bank project, Co-Principal Investigator and Director of Informatics of the Protein Data Bank, and Co-Principal Investigator on a U.S. DOE pilot project in functional genomics.

I worked on complex genetic analysis problems in clinical practice and research, e.g. the European Cystic Fibrosis study.

I worked in the wet lab on the molecular characterization of pathogenicity of human viruses (HIV and HPV), using standard techniques of molecular and cell biology. I also established and ran a biocomputing laboratory for sequence analysis. I co-developed a patented method of predicting immunogenic properties of small oligopeptides, and I designed and developed a commercially successful software package that implemented the method.

I worked in a start-up agro-biotech laboratory on the fermentation of Bacillus thuringiensis. I also wrote software for an industrial microcomputer that controlled the fermentation process. The software was successfully marketed by the company.
