Conducted research and development of cardiovascular surgery methods using innovative technical solutions and imaging techniques. Transformed one of my innovations from an idea and concept into a pre-clinical study, followed by a successful funding application for a clinical safety and feasibility study. Instructed a yearly cardiovascular pharmacology course at the medical school and supervised medical students.

Collaborated in development and optimization of 3D microvascular device directed for cancer and blood brain barrier research.

Managed analysis of 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data to quantify substrate oxidation in thyroid deficiency, diabetes and aging. Produced research papers, abstracts, posters, and wrote successful grant applications.

Performed research on cardiac function and metabolism during thyroid dysfunction, hypothermia, ischemia and cardiopulmonary bypass. Designed, set up and tested equipment and protocols for various surgical models, including isolated hearts, in vivo cardiac catheterization and cardiopulmonary bypass. Performed minor and major surgeries together with ip, iv or inhalation anesthesia, physiological monitoring and cardiopulmonary bypass pump operation. Analyzed data of extensive animal physiologic and metabolic measurements including statistical computations. Prepared research papers, abstracts, posters, presentations, grant applications and protocols. Organized collaboration with laboratories in Seattle (Fluorescent Microsphere Resource Center, Dept of Pathology, Dept of Chemistry) and elsewhere (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, University of Utah, Southwestern Medical Center, UC Davis).

Collaborated with engineers in development and validation of noninvasive perfusion measurements in skeletal muscle with MRS. Established new models and research protocols, including literature review, design, set up and testing of isolated and in vivo stimulated limb preparation for MRS. Investigated cardiac and skeletal muscle dynamics, energy metabolism and blood flow with magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P, 1H - MRS) and microsphere infusion during normoxia and hypoxia. Prepared research papers, abstracts, posters, presentations and successful grant applications.

Performed research on cardiac metabolism and function in hypothermia, ischemia and thyroid dysfunction in isolated heart model using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C) and isotopomer analysis.

Performed research on individual cardiac myofibril biomechanics with microscopy (phasecontrast, DIC, fluorescence). Edited scientific content and language for “Cells, Gels and the Engines of Life: A New, Unifying Approach to Cell Function” by Gerald H. Pollack, 2001.
