As a Process Automation Engineer working for Ethicon LLC in San Lorenzo, the main focus of my job would be the automation of manufacturing lines by leading multidisciplinary teams during the process of Business case creation, project planning, system design, development, installation, validation, training, project control and ramp up phases; to help achieve our business goals.During the time in this position I have the opportunity to lead start to end cost improvement projects, reliability projects and operational optimization projects. The projects varied from the use of robotics to automate previous human dependent product transfer, to in-process product quality inspection automated using high resolution vision systems.The projects implemented during this position have helped Ethicon’s manufacturing lines in the following aspects:• Headcount optimization • Safety and Ergonomics• OEE increase ( Performance) in the machines • Reliability improvements• CIP• Quality In addition to automation projects, as Ethicon SL Machine Safety Engineering SME I have had the opportunity to develop the “Machine Safety 3 Year Project Road-map”, an initiative that have trigger a multi-million dollar investment aiming to make our site and equipment safer for the user.

As a base business manufacturing engineer in the CRDM division of the company, the main purpose of my job was to support manufacturing operations, ensure proper operation of manufacturing equipment, quality of the product and improve the processes by projects execution. During this term I was trained and developed to work with various types of technologies among witch are:• Micro laser soldering• Laser engraving• Epoxy dispensing• Ovens and dehumidifiersDuring this position I was able to:• Improve infra-red curing machines performance• Optimize epoxy dispensing patterns • Eliminate oven conveyors jams helping waste reduction in the 5 digit numbers.

During this Coop I was part of the Engineering reliability Team. During this year the main project was the focused on:• Energy conservation • Critical parts failure elimination A vision system was developed to replace fiber optic component that was the main cause of downtime in an automated platform. The system implementation resulted in 15% reduction in machine downtime across the platform and a significant compress air consumption reduction.

As a graduate student in the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez Campus I worked as an electronics and circuit laboratory instructor for undergraduate students in the electrical engineering and industrial engineering departments. During those years I was able to teach 60 students per semester (2 sections) in the basics of electronics and circuits.
