Ove Hoegh-Guldberg is a Professor of Marine Science at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. He has a BSc (honors) from the University of Sydney and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. Ove’s research focuses on the biology of coral reefs, particularly the impacts of ocean warming and acidification. In addition to publishing over 400 publications, Ove leads a research group and has started innovative education programs such as Stanford Australia and more recently - Massive Open Online Courses or MOOCs at UQ. He was the Coordinating Lead Author (CLA) for the ‘Oceans’ chapter for the IPCC fifth assessment report and the Impacts Chapter of the IPCC Special Report for the implications of 1.5oC for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He was awarded the Eureka Prize for his scientific research in 1999 and an ARC Laureate (2013-2019) after finishing his term as Smart State Premier’s Fellow (2008–13). He was elected to the Australian Academy of Science in 2013. Ove is a member of the top 0.01% most productive scientists globally (Ioannidis et al. 2019) PLoS Biology, 17(8), p.e3000384.) and has received numerous awards including the Prince Albert II of Monaco Climate Change Award, The Banksia Foundation International Prize and several from Thomson Reuters (e.g. Citation Award Winner in Ecology Thomson Reuters Citation & Innovation Award in 2012). He was listed among the 100 most influential people in Climate Policy (Apolitical.co) in 2019.

According to ISI Essential Science Indicators, four of the ARC Centre’s major research partners rank in the top 20 institutions world-wide for citations for coral reef science. Collectively, the ARC Centre creates the world’s largest concentration of coral reef scientists.The Centre Director is Professor Terry Hughes (JCU). Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg (UQ) and Professor Malcolm McCulloch (UWA) are the Deputy Directors. All three individuals are ARC Laureate Fellows.
