Conducted a novel scientific research project on DNA extraction to evaluate different DNA extraction methods and to find which one produced the highest quality and quantity of DNA and suitable for long-range amplification. Worked practically in molecular biology labs and gained new biochemistry skills (conducting PCR and gel electrophoresis) as well as apply previously gained skills (teamwork, data analysis, initiative) to a scientific work setting and strengthen them. Worked mostly without supervision and to my own accord to complete various experiments linked to the project. Also had the opportunity to shadow the analytical chemistry labs and see various analytical equipment (HPLC) in use to analyse biotoxins in shellfish like lipophilic toxins. Assisted the analytical chemistry team in making of their sanples to analyse through shucking and homogenising shellfish flesh from oysters, mussels and cockles.
