Medical Assistant
CurrentAt Lake Shore Primary Care Associates (LSPCA), I have had the opportunity to grow over the last 6 years, where I now serve as a medical assistant at LSPCA's busy interdisciplinary primary care office -- serving all ages from newly born infants to those in hospice care. Working as a Medical Assistant, I regularly assist eight physicians (MD/DO), and seven midlevel providers (PA/NP) in patient-care including taking patient history and assessments using Medent EMR, completing diagnostic testing such as ECG's, spirometry and rapid antigen testing (SARS-Cov-2, Strep, Flu, etc). I also assist in dermatological office procedures such as lesion removal, lacerations, suture and staple removal. Working directly with patients at Lake Shore Primary Care Associates over the last 6 years has undoubtedly been one of the most influential experiences in medicine that I have had because of the growth that I’ve sustained while learning. At LSPCA, I quickly realized that we serve a very diverse group of patients, especially working in Western New York. This diversity is more than just the diversity of illnesses we treat, but also the different patient histories we hear and the interactions we have each day. Working one-on-one with these patients has allowed me to gain a better understanding of what being a great physician should look like. More so, as I’ve become more senior in the company and have had the opportunity to train new medical assistants, the qualities of teamwork, effective communication, critical thinking and the capacity for improvement are among the most important that I continue to grow (and continue to develop with new hires). This experience, along with the other invaluable transformative experiences that I’ve had so far in my pre-med journey have solidified my obligation of being the best physician I can be moving forward.
Teaching Assistant
As a teaching assistant, I focused on continuing application-based education through leading two sections of 3-hour labs, each consisting of more than 25 students. Weekly, I was responsible for creating, proctoring, and grading weekly quizzes in order to identify gaps in knowledge and promote confidence when applying education. In addition to being able to dependably answer questions via email and holding office hours, the experience of TA’ing has opened my eyes to effective communication and education strategies which will be helpful when educating patients as a future physician. Being an Evolutionary Biology (BIO 200) TA was my favorite non-clinical experience that parallels some of the strategies and techniques that great physicians use each day. My first time TA’ing the class, it was held in a hybrid format. This meant that simultaneously, I was responsible for educating students both in-person and virtually in a hands-on lab experience. Initially, this came with some difficulty, despite being a confident public speaker, as managing the classroom at a collegiate level was sometimes troublesome. After adapting to the situation and becoming a more confident educator, I applied to be a teaching assistant for evolutionary biology for the next year as I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. In my second time with a lab full of students, I often found myself realizing that the different levels of education backgrounds that each student has is quite different, which paralleled patients’ level of familiarity with their conditions, and the prevention of many of the common diagnoses that affect our area. As a TA, I firmly believe that the experience was a solid foundation for being able to educate others, which transferred well to other areas in my journey (so far) through medicine!
