This involves using various laboratory equipment and machines, such as a COD reactor and a spectrophotometer.• Testing the water samples for the content of solids.• Inspecting the samples under the microscope for the presence of micro-life, generally looking out for rotifers and water bears.• Taking special samples now and again and packaging them to be sent to the EPA for external tests.• Weekly tests on surface water run-offs and samples from nearby streams.• Recording the conductivity, temperature and ph of various samples.• If results for any of the tests are out of spectrum, this must be reported and we must then investigate as to why this has happened and how we can fix it, for example if Ammonia levels are high, there may be a large discharge of blood from the factory getting into the wastewater somewhere. -

I also worked in the Value-Added floor for 4 years, where flavoured powders and such are added to the chicken products.• I operated most machines on the floor, from the Reiser machines which seal plastic trays, to the Delford label machines along the conveyor belts.• I also worked for a few months on the box-weigh, where you have to memorise product codes and be aware of use-by dates for each product.• These 5 years’ experience gave me a great first-hand overview of how a large scale meat processing plant is operated. -
