About Owen Williams

University astute software engineer with 30+ years experience of working with GNU/Linux, enterprise, free, and open source software.My background is in electronic library research and enhanced learning through technology. I have built server rooms, servers, and software to support web based services. I have administered GNU/Linux, Solaris, and AIX employing various database and backup solutions. I have five years experience of managing a team. As well as developing the full stack of digital services, I enjoy being part of a larger management effort to shape a service. I have a interest in the research area of team maturity.I am interested in what is coming next and always looking over the horizon, slightly frustrated that I can not investigate it all today. I make most progress as a manager and mentor as part of a team. I have good experience and instinct at most levels of computing. Strong GNU/Linux, open source skills in a web context. The main element of the work, for me, was to introduce lean development expertise to the charity.

    2010-2018 As a developer maintaining and developing services across DMU including trouble shooting for the Infrastructure Team. I worked with business partners and analysts, central IT teams, senior managers, academics (fine art, architecture, sustainable development, computing, music), and professional services teams. I developed the CentOS template for the VMWare virtual machines and fixed issues related to the SAP environment based on SUSE Linux Enterprise. I developed early solutions for the Threat management Group using OpenVAS before the adoption of Qualys. We received training in ITIL and I was awarded accreditation in Understanding Mediation for Conflict Resolution.2006-2010 I managed the Web Team in the library. Three colleagues and I developed services including the library management system (Talis/Capita), self-service, the library website (bespoke LAMP/PHP), the open research archive (DSpace including Explorer multimedia), DMU Academic Commons (multisite WordPress for every student and member of staff), and off-air recordings and video on demand similar to Box of Broadcasts. We created two server rooms and duplicated services across them for redundancy. Services used Sybase, PostgreSQL, MySQL databases and were backed up using Amanda and ZFS on Sun x4500 24TB disk arrays. During this time I did various training courses related to management skills including organisational change and difficult conversations. I was awarded a PRINCE2 foundation qualification.1994-1997 This period of my career at DMU was more research focused. Projects included retrieval of images in databases, metadata and fulltext search and retrieval. This research culminated in the development of services based on an IBM SP2 (AIX) super computer in a bespoke machine room.
