About Owen Scott

The primary purpose for my professional self and company is to help organization leaders transform their operations using software - quickly and efficiently. For the last eighteen years I have been able to do exactly that, using low-code platforms like Microsoft Dynamics and lately the Power Platform. My special power is to deliver the highest standards of solution architecture ... FRACTIONALLY. There are many reasons why a Fractional Solution Architect is far more cost-effective and delivers more value than a traditional Solution Architect hired in a full-time role, but among them are the fact that when we are honest, the Solution Architect role itself is not necessarily a full-time requirement on a given project. Our work is often front and back-end loaded, but the current and traditional approach to hiring and role placement does not allow the flexibility that is provides the most benefit to the project and organization. What is my ideal customer? A C-Suite Executive or Government or Non-Profit Leader who is passionate about helping the people that work for them, and doing that through the deployment of elegant, easy-to-use software interfaces. In terms of platform, I believe that no single platform should be used in all circumstances, since if I've learned anything at all in the last 18 years, it's that no two organizations are precisely alike, and therefore each organization will require a slightly different deployment. Having said that, I have had a lot of success in helping organizations deploy Microsoft Dynamics 365, Azure and the Power Platform. Specifically, this includes at the enterprise level on over 60 deployments, and over 100 small to mid-size projects. I've been quite excited with what Microsoft has been doing with Azure, the Power Platform, and the DataVerse lately, especially with respect to integration methods using Power Automate and the Azure stack. With respect to the Power Platform, I truly feel that it is not an understatement to say that this platform could revolutionize the way organizations of all kinds approach software development and delivery. If you think I might be able to help you, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thanks - Owen

The Business Transformation Architect is essentially the Solution Architect which uses a specific set of critical points during the software development process, the primary tenet being that the needs of the organization are paramount:1. Alignment with Business/Operational Goals: Prioritizing the needs of the business ensures that the software development process aligns with the overarching goals and objectives of the organization. This alignment guarantees that the end product supports business strategies, drives growth, and enhances competitive advantage, rather than merely showcasing technological prowess without practical applicability.2. Operational Efficiency: Focusing on business needs helps in optimizing resource allocation and minimizing development costs. Automating the tasks that are carried out on a daily basis as much as possible frees up staff time and leads to greater productivity.3. Improved User Experience: Understanding and prioritizing the business context, including the end-users' needs and challenges, allows for the creation of software that delivers a more intuitive and effective user experience. When the software is developed with the end-user in mind, it is more likely to be embraced by its intended audience, thereby supporting the business's objectives.5. Risk Management: Aligning software development with business needs helps in identifying and mitigating potential risks early in the development process. This proactive approach to risk management can prevent costly mistakes and project delays, ensuring that the software fulfills its intended business purpose without unforeseen complications.6. Agility and Responsiveness: Keeping the focus on business needs allows development teams to remain agile and responsive to changing market conditions and business strategies. This flexibility is crucial in today's fast-paced business environment, where companies must quickly adapt to new opportunities and challenges to stay ahead.

During the last two years of this project, we focused on further streamlining the processes and deployment of Microsoft Dynamics CRM version 8.2 across eleven (11) programs designed to serve approximately 60,000 students in the Specialized Population cohort at Los Angeles Unified School District, which is the second-largest district in the United States. The eleven programs were administered by the Student Health and Human Services (SHHS) department at the district. Examples of the programs that made use of this highly customized version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM were the Homeless Education Program, the Foster Youth Achievement Program, Attendance Improvement Program, Healthy Start, SEPA, Children's Health Access and Medi-Cal Program (CHAMP), the Group Home Scholars Program, the Foreign Students Program, as well as SARP and SART. We also provided more automation, particularly around the workflow approval of the procurement of goods and services through an automated system that provided structured email which allowed administrators to easily approve requests, which were written to the database.

Microsoft Dynamics Crm Deployment - Los Angeles Unified School District

During the first two years of this project, we began by deployment an instance of Microsoft Dynamics CRM version 2015 for the Foster Youth Achievement Program, the Group Home Program and the Homeless Education Program. These three programs were part of the Student Health and Human Services department, and served approximately 40,000 students in the Specialized Population cohort at Los Angeles Unified School District, which is the second-largest district in the United States. For the first two years, we deployed the project using standard Agile Software Developemnt Lifecycle Practices, and we used Team Foundation Server (later re-named to Azure DevOps), both the manage the code base as well as to track Requirements, as expressed in User Stories, as well as Bugs, Test Cases and Tasks. To an extent, however, our practice could be termed a "Hybrid Agile" approach, since we did rely on robust and comprehensive documentation in the form of Functional Design and Technical Design documents, which were reviewed and approved. Toward the end of the second year, we began the requirements gathering for the remaining eight programs, such as the Attendance Improvement Program, Healthy Start, SEPA, Children's Health Access and Medi-Cal Program (CHAMP), the Group Home Scholars Program, the Foreign Students Program, as well as SARB and SART. The outcome both streamlined operations of the various programs at SHHS, as well as provided a single database that stored critical information about the student from all SHHS programs in a single place, which was not previously done. Thus a centralized database of information was available to SHHS counselors as students received help from the various programs.

In my time as a Solution Architect with Netwoven, which is a premier Microsoft Partner, I have been quite fortunate to have worked on some very high-profile projects for very large, enterprise customers, all of which have been as fascinating as they are demanding. We have completed the deployment of numerous Microsoft Power Pages (formerly known as Power App Portals) for companies which sought to expose parts of their DataVerse database so that their customers and partners could interact with data specific to them. Due to the modern nature of the Power Pages interface, this was achievable with relatively less struggle, even when the deployment was required to support multiple languages. For both the enterprise for-profit sector, as well as the public government sector, we constructed robust and highly customized versions of both Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement as well as Power Apps custom applications. Some of these projects have lasted more than two years, and continue into 2024. In addition to these projects, I was also fortunate to be able to work with very large retail companies using Microsoft Dynamics Marketing in their efforts to communicate effectively with their partners, specifically with respect to recent government compliance directives. One of these projects included a custom web application integrated into the deployment of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Marketing to further enhance the survey capability of the Voice of the Customer and the DataVerse. My role in most of these projects was as Solution Architect, but in a number of them I was also responsible for Business Analysis, which includes energy-driven sessions with the business to gather the most accurate and comprehensive requirements, documenting those requirements, and confirming them. For most of these projects, I was very happy to work with the Global Development team, who are among the most hard-working and committed team members I have ever seen in any organization.

Partnersource Solutions Mar 2019 - Present
    Orange County, California Area
In my time as a Senior Solution Architect with PartnerSource IT I have been thrilled to work on a series of fascinating and ongoing projects for some of the most interesting companies and Non-Profit organizations in the United States as well as the UK.Several notable, long-term projects/deployments stand out:1. The ongoing support (going on 4 years now) of a highly customized version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2016 version 8.2 for a manufacturing company located near Phoenix, AZ. This company relies on the deployment of this system to run almost every facet of the business, and it has been an extraordinary pleasure to support this complex deployment for years. From detailed SHHS reports, to custom .NET plugins, JavaScript, data analytics, as well as integrations such as ClickDimensions, Twilio, and LeadsBridge, the system has all the hallmarks of a typically mature system to run a multi-million dollar operation, which is a testament to the resilience of the on-premises version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Providing this level of support is possible because I was able to draw on many years of experience in helping to run xRM, which was at one point the number one provider of Microsoft Dynamics CRM Private Hosted service in North America.. 2. The deployment and three-year support of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Enterprise Sales for a billion dollar real estate and land management and development firm headquartered in Calgary, Cananda, but also with operations in Phoenix, AZ, Hong Kong, and Singapore. This deployment, over a two-year period, provided interfaces and automations for the successful management of the Acquisitions Department, as well as the Asset Management department.3. A deployment of Microsoft Dynamics Fundraising and Engagement for a highly successful and impactful Non-Profit organization in the Atlanta region. Along with ClickDimensions, the deployment of F&E helped the organization to streamline operations and fundraising and engagement operations.

Building software solutions, primarily for the Non-Profit sector, primarily using Microsoft Dynamics 365. A typical engagement starts with a detailed requirements gathering session to ferret out the requirements that are specific to your method of operations and workflow. Projects like these are extremely Agile, such that it is often more efficient to construct prototypes instead of spending long and expensive hours on detailed design documents (as much as I like to write!), so that stakeholders can get their hands on the software immediately and provide feedback.Because Microsoft Dynamics 365 is flexible and relatively easy to customize, it lends itself to rapid application development. We have had a lot of success over the years in building powerful solutions to help with fundraising, engagement, and program management.
