Project Engineer

Perth, Australia

I had the great fortune to work in the Road Recycling division of Downer. Due to the staggeringly vast extent of the road network in WA, when a pavement fails, a cost effective repair solution is to recycle the existing road where it sits. With work taking place all over the state, the logistical challenge to bring together all the elements in remote locations is quite similar to running a marathon. Add to this the fact that all of this was done by a small team, I gained extensive experience in end-to-end contracting. Assisting the State Manager, I was able to excel in the following;-Sourcing and Quoting for work-Managing Bids for larger projects-Negotiating Contracts following successful bods-Managing the Projects once the contracts were agreed-Managing the Contractors carrying out the work-Ensuring the Company’s Quality, Environmental and OH&S standards were upheld-Closing out the projects and meeting all deliverablesSome of my successes in this time included; Bid Manager for two separate $5M tenders, the largest value in the industry and I was the Project Manager of the AAPA 2017 Outstanding Project National Award.

Dec 2010 - Oct 2016

Secondee - Oh&S Management

Broome, Western Australia

I was chosen to represent Downer, as part of their Reconciliation Action Plan, to take part in the Jawun Program. I was stationed in Broome for six weeks to work with a local aboriginal organisation. They were a NFP working to facilitate the self-sustainability of aboriginal people in the region through the use of training, apprenticeship, youth engagement and support and employment services. They also have a number of trades companies through which they can direct their candidates. I was given the responsibility of assessing the OH&S capability of each of the entities as well as carrying out a full business risk assessment for each of them. This risk assessment had a dual purpose in that it facilitated the training of the business managers to carry out their own subsequent risk assessments. I was quite pleased to find that I was able to bring value to each the different businesses. Bringing together the experience of my working life, my people skills and my coaching training, I could challenge the managers to think outside the box, to question processes to see if they were relevant and make suggestions that were of benefit. Another benefit of this secondment was the other nine people stationed there with me. This afforded me the ability to see into other people’s working lives and gain an understanding of other industries and positions that would otherwise be unavailable to me. https://jawun.org.au/
