MORE PEOPLE DIE ON THE DESCENT FROM MOUNT EVEREST THAN THE CLIMBI read this fact recently and it struck a chord with me. I stepped away from full time corporate life in mid August 2024 and in the months since I have spent all the time I can on my own personal "Reset". Taking that time has given me the chance to disconnect from the daily grind of business and rebalance life with travel, family and personal care.My corporate climb began in 1985 with a freshly printed university degree in Commerce/Marketing from the University of NSW I headed to regional NSW with Elders Pastoral. The picture attached shows the start of a journey in technology and innovation. That led to a 40 year career dominated by various roles in Telstra and IBM. I unpacked some of that in a farewell photo with a briefcase of memories , there are many memorable experiences illustrated and so many more no briefcase can hold. To any and all I have worked with over those 40 years, the memories are clearest of you the people, places and times shared together, Thanks for those who have been and continue to be a valued part of that.My descent from the mountain will be gradual and measured.. on the way down I intend to assist a few still on the way up and share with them what I have experienced. To that end I have registered Reset Advisory as a vehicle to allow that. More on that to come in 2025.

Based in Melbourne and responsible for all aspects of the IBM business relationship with ANZ Bank in Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific/Europe/Americas. In July 2010 IBM moved the ANZ Bank into the Global Integrated Account model as result of their existing strategic relationship and the need to coordinate business across the markets into which ANZ is expanding as a “Super Regional Bank”. Owen Rayment was appointed as Managing Director to lead this business with all related IBM teams in these regions led from the Melbourne base.

Responsible for leading the technical and sales team across all IBM relationships with major banking, insurance and financial markets clients, partnering with them to bring integrated IBM capability and innovation to their business. Led key executive relationships in major banks and industry forums/bodies in FSS, frequently speaking on behalf of IBM at Industry forums. Grew the FSS business strongly, and navigated the Global Financial Crisis with clients in the local market.

Client Director with responsibility for the Telstra Account.Management of the IBM/Telstra executive relationships based on the existing large scale services relationship between the organisations and linking that to emerging business requirements and innovation IBM can bring to meet those needs.Managed the opportunities and issues during this period as Telstra launched a major technology driven transformation to modernise legacy operations for the new telecommunications market environment.

Seeking a role with less travel and more hands on exposure to the client and business relationship I relocated to Melbourne to join the IBM Australia team on the Telstra account. Joining in a senior sales role in March a promotion to lead the team would present itself later that year in October.

IBM Asia Pacific Emerging & Competitive Business Executive. Managing IBM’s investments in Venture Capital funds and startup/early stage technology businesses. This role was responsible for guiding the IBM investments in 9 VC funds across AsiaPac. A major outcome was to lead the formation of a China-USA VC alliance of funds IBM had invested in for co-op VC activities.

ANZ Business Manager, for a Start Up software firm – The Fantastic Corporation. Solutions for content distribution on Telstra Broadband networks.Focus was to deliver a multicast ip content platform on the Telstra Cable, DSL and Satellite networks. Project funded and successfully completed to pilot POC but never commercially deployed by Telstra.

IBM Asia Pacific Solutions and Marketing Management, Telecommunications & Media Industry Segments. A/NZ, ASEAN region, Greater China, Japan and Korea.This role had responsibility to take IBM and partner assets in the segment to each market and develop the IBM internal skills and external C-level client engagements in these diverse markets.Based from Sydney but travelling 15-20 days per month in Asia.

Commenced in Canberra managing various Government agency contracts including foreign emabassy and the NASA tracking station contracts. Led the sales team which was awarded to global Australian Dept of Foreign Affairs ADCNET contract. Promoted to Asssistant General Manager of the Telstra Federal Group in 1992 to lead the non Defence agency teams.Promoted to Client Director in 1995 and relocated to Sydney to lead the Telstra Media and Broadcasting segment sales team. Major contracts and relationships with Tier 1 TV and Radio Broadcasters and Publishers. The convergence of Media, IT and Comms was starting to present interesting opportunities for all in this ecosystem.
