Primary Prevention is a fundamental element of the Monterey County Rape Crisis Center's mission to end gender-based and sexual violence. The Rape Prevention Education (RPE) team works hard to ensure that our curricula and presentations are evidence-based, research-informed and culturally relevant to the communities that we work in. We approach prevention from a public health perspective and believe that by increasing protective factors we can decrease the risk of sexual violence.As a member of the Rape Prevention Education team, I was responsible for:• Facilitating weekly clubs for boys and boy-identifying youth at four local high schools aimed at the primary prevention of gender-based violence perpetration by boys and men• Planning, developing, and conducting presentations to middle school, high school and college students addressing sexual violence• Providing space and time for students to meet after presentations and club meetings to address individual needs, sometimes including the disclosure of child abuse• Making CPS/law enforcement reports with awareness and sensitivity to the impact of these reports on the child, their family, and the school• Maintaining statistics for RPE services monthly and preparing reports as required• Working closely with RPE program staff to maintain and strengthen MCRCC relationships with community partners• Assisting with volunteer advocate training, board and staff training, fundraising events, and monthly volunteer advocate meetings• Providing crisis intervention, phone/in-person counseling, and advocacy services• Maintaining confidentiality of all client information

Based on the successful completion of my 27-month Peace Corps service I decided to apply for a one-year extension as a volunteer leader. After a competitive process I was selected as one of seven Regional Coordinators because of my professionalism, cultural adaptability, leadership skills, and language ability. Individuals selected as Regional Coordinators are outstanding third-year volunteers who act as a liaison between Peace Corps Staff, volunteers, and host country/partner organizations in each region. My four main roles included:• Volunteer Support - It was my job to ensure that volunteers in the province of Veraguas felt productive and safe by providing them with consistent professional and personal support.• Inter-institutional Coordination - By maintaining consistent contact with local government bodies, international projects, and other agencies I was able to better inform volunteers of potential collaborative opportunities and resources available to them and their host community.• Site Identification/Preparation - The process of identifying and selecting communities to receive a Peace Corps volunteer takes many months and involves consistent communication, numerous meetings, and impromptu visits in order to ensure the motivation and need of each individual community. Regional Coordinators are integral in the success of this process, and during my term I successfully identified and developed 20 communities that would eventually receive volunteers.• Safety and Security - Collaborating with the safety and security team of Peace Corps by performing housing inspections, maintaining communication with local authorities and emergency service providers, and providing support during security incidents was essential to the assurance of a safe Peace Corps service for all volunteers in the province of Veraguas.

Upon completion of my first year of service in Peace Corps I made the decision to run for the position of Vice President of the executive board of the Gender and Development committee for Peace Corps Panama. During my one-year term I promoted gender equality and youth development throughout Panama by encouraging the facilitation of workshops, developing new and editing existing curriculum for seminars, and supporting volunteers in the planning and execution of activities.
