I was leaving school with no idea what to do. My careers advisor was very keen for me to go to uni. “What do you want to do” he would ask… “a ski instructor” (of course). So we compromised and I studied “Outdoor Adventure Leadership and Management” at The University of Worcester. As much as I loved kayaking and rock climbing every week, I began to feel that it wasn’t the career choice for me; and honestly, I was 18 and didn’t feel ready to move to the Lake District or Snowdonia. I left in my second year. After 4 hellish months working in a factory, I decided to train as a barber. I have done this for around 9 years and enjoyed the social aspect, but I knew from the start that this wouldn’t be my long term career. So what could I do? This question puzzled me for years. I didn’t have the typical miraculous chiropractic treatment leaving me destined to be a chiropractor, but I had been to a chiropractor previously. As usual, I did my “pros and cons” list and chiropractic seemed to tick the boxes. I loved biology at school, I’d be able to work with individuals, and there was a good earning potential. If someone had told me how difficult the course would be, I probably wouldn’t have applied. But 5 years of very hard work (and late nights… and stress) later, the cliché came true - “it was all worth it in the end”. I am now in my first year of practice as an associate chiropractor at Treforest Chiropractic. I am able to satisfy and develop my interest in human biology and movement. I get to talk with individuals and learn their stories. And I’m using this early clinical experience to focus on learning as much as I can to enable me to better help my patients. I’m happy to report that I have found what I want to do, and I’m blessed that it’s a career in chiropractic.
