About Owen Williams
I am and Research Professor whos lab studies turbulence and its resulting impact on vehicle design, environmental processes and energy generation. Such flows have significant complexity due to strong flow curvature, heat-transfer, or compressibility that pushes the boundaries of current modeling and engineering design simulation capabilities. We aim to enhance our understanding of the physics of turbulence, as well its structure and scaling. This work has the potential to greatly enhance our ability to predict vehicular and environmental flows, reducing uncertainties and expanding the design envelope with increased confidence. Please see the following link for a list of current projects
Listed skills include Fluid Dynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Aerodynamics, Numerical Analysis, and 12 others.

Research Associate Professor
Research Associate Professor
Research Assistant Professor
► Active research group examining a wide range of fluids phenomena including supersonic retropropulsion, hypersonic turbulence, turbulent structure and scaling, large-scale separated flows and applications of machine learning to turbulence. Utilizing a combination of experimental and numerical approaches. Development of cutting edge flow diagnostics such as hypersonic PIV to obtain data in regimes or locations not previously possible.► 3'x3' wind tunnel manager; promoting long-term planning and execution of instrumentation revamp.
Deputy Director
Research Associate, Faculty (Non-Tenure Track)
► Leadership role within the CROCCO computational lab (http://croccolab.umd.edu/), using direct numerical simulation (DNS) and advanced mathematical techniques to improve our understanding of shock-boundary layer interactions, necessary for reducing loading and increasing efficiency of high-speed vehicles.► Worked closely with the a team from a US national wind tunnel facility (AEDC’s HypervelocityTunnel 9) leveraging previous experience to add new diagnostic capabilities (PIV).
Graduate Research Assistant
Research: Experiments in Compressible Turbulence within the Mach 8 Tunnel at the Princeton Gas Dynamics Lab. Constructed and conducted experiments within a wind tunnel capable of investigating the impact of thermal stability on turbulence within the atmosphere aiming to improve our understanding of atmospheric turbulence in polar regions. ► Experimental and numerical research examining the commonalities between turbulence in the polar atmosphere and the boundary layers around high-speed aircraft with aim to improve climate models and validate simulations required to design high-speed vehicles.► Extensive wind tunnel experience including development and operation of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in hypersonic flows, providing unprecedented detail of flows at high-speed.► Extensive experience conveying the impact of cutting edge research to both technical and layaudiences. Greater than 25 presentations and invited talks.
Mcgraw Teaching Fellow
Leader of graduate student teaching course emphasizing methods of effective teaching inscience and engineering. Also served on the Graduate Mentorship Award Committee.
General Technical Assistant, Integration Team
Undertook an investigation of helicopter vibrations using flight test data and then implemented a high fidelity Seat Shaker system to provide proper vibration cueing to simulator pilots. As a member of the integration team, duties also included assembly and testing of helicopter simulator components as well as gaining a working knowledge of aviation standards.
