About Owen Williams Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Scientist and NHS Trainee Clinical Scientist specialising in bioinformatics and functional genomics, with extensive experience in GWAS and genetic fine mapping. I have over seven years’ experience working in molecular labs in both the UK and Australia with hands-on experience in genetic diagnosis and variant interpretation. I have worked on projects such as the 100K genome project, evaluated COVID-19 genetic variants, and diagnosising a suite of other genetic diseases. As a trainee Clinical Scientist, I’m currently working with big data and developing pipelines to promote positive patient outcomes. My interests are in understanding the molecular and genetic components underpinning disease pathogenesis, and I am fascinated in the newly emerging bioinformatic techniques that can assist in translating knowledge into actionable medical interventions.

Oct 2020 - Present

Genetic Technologist

Nottingham, England, United Kingdom

My primary role as a Genetic Technologist was validating rare genetic diseases and cancers for the 100K Genome project. Significant workload related to the analysis and interpretation of genetic variants in accordance with the ACMG guidelines.I also conducted a diverse range of in-house diagnostic tests using NGS, Sanger sequencing, and fragment analysis techniques. This involved analysis, interpretation and timely reporting whilst maintaining strict quality control standards in line with ISO 15189.With the emergence of the pandemic, I was later seconded to the Queen’s Medical Centre Hospital where I specialised in COVID-19 testing.

Phd Student

Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

A quantitative genetics-based PhD using QTL and fine mapping approaches, to investigate the genetic control of domestication-related traits in the common garden pea (Pisum sativum). I have identified and validated novel QTLs as well as providing greater mapping resolution to previously known genomic regions. I have also developed the second most detailed pea genetic linkage map, which provides a new and important genomic resource for future mapping studies, with its assembly validated by performing a detailed examination of synteny with well-characterized sequenced genomes
