I truly believe that each of us is here for a purpose, and because my strong sense of compassion has acted in concert with my stubborn attachment to logic, I have never been able to fathom the possibility that the sole purpose of any given life form can be to maintain its own existence and this applies particularly to humans because of our capacity for awareness of others' needs. In harmony with these principles and beliefs, I have consistently sought professional and personal opportunities through which I have had the ability to serve the community by contributing in the areas of education and law particularly where lack of fairness, opportunity, and equal access had created obstacles and barriers for people - or animals - simply trying to reach and sustain a quality of life beyond mere survival to which every being has a right. I am grateful for every experience I have had to at least provide support during - if not attenuate or even alleviate - the struggle and isolation inevitably inherent in trying to cope under the avalanche of these conditions.

Senior Tutor: Special Needs, Esl, Law, Adv.Writing, Basic Skills, Study Techniques/Strategies, Etc.Self Employed And Independent Contractor Jan 2011 - PresentPortland Metro AreaI have tutored - and still do tutor - students in all skills (including ESL), at all stages from "basic" to "advanced," at any age, and presenting with a wide spectrum of needs and strengths. I consider my main responsibility to be the development and delivery of curricula based on an INDIVIDUALIZED education plan with specific objectives. These objectives will have been determined by the formal and informal assessment of each student's unique needs and strengths. Each plan will include effective, honest, and consistent forms of reinforcement for all effort put forth - and progress made - by each student. The mode of instruction, primarily, will be based on my Socratic, multi-sensory, and highly interactive teaching style, with feedback in the form of meaningful praise as its driving force.

Teacher In Special Education, Grades 1-12A Variety Of Public And Private Schools Jan 1978 - Jun 1997California And OregonIntermittently, over a 20 year period, I taught students in public and private schools who were diagnosed with academic and/or behavioral "special needs," in both California and Oregon (at different times!). In addition to teaching and conducting "IEP" planning meetings, my responsibilities included the administration and analysis of skills and behavioral assessments leading to authoring the respective students' IEP's. These legal documents included individualized short term objectives and long term goals, as well as recommended strategies for achieving the mastery of each. In conjunction with these duties, I designed and implemented classroom - and individualized - curricula (e.g. appropriate, relevant and effective programs and materials) in all basic skill areas, for students at all age and performance levels, who met the criteria for federally mandated instruction in special education, from elementary through high school, inclusive.
