Stan Yoder is a medical anthropologist and specialist in research methods in the social sciences currently designing and directing qualitative research projects with the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) group at Macro International. Yoder has conducted research on local knowledge of illness and medicine and on the development and evaluation of community health projects in 20 countries in Africa. At DHS he has conducted research on the understanding of survey questions by respondents, the translation of questions into local languages, and understanding of informed consent in surveys by respondents, in addition to studies on knowledge and experience related to nutrition, HIV/AIDS, alcohol consumption, and female genital cutting. He seeks to better understand the potential and limitations of survey data as well as data in a more narrative form.
