About Peyton Vaughn

Personal summaries are always a challenge. When you don't know your audience, and what they are trying to learn about you, it's tempting to fall back to a synopsis of the things you've accomplished. But when your interests are diverse, and the unfamiliar is welcome, you don't want to be limited to only the things that you've done. But if pressed to elaborate on my career, and the opportunities I've had and look forward to, I’d have to answer:I want to be actively challenged. As someone who has been on the recruiting end for all of my employers, I appreciate the desire to find the candidate that has the perfect match of skills. But I have to say, I prefer opportunities that allow me to tackle new problems and expand my skill-set, so I can grow as a developer.I want to provide solutions for a “customer” that is actively engaged. Whether it’s the newsroom editor, understaffed but managing a flood of deadlines; or the researcher, juggling ideas and resources to solve a complex problem. Invariably, they’re busy (who isn’t?). But this also means I’ve been fortunate enough to work with end-users who are enthusiastic (who would endure the stress otherwise?). And that enthusiasm is infectious. Their concerns quickly become your concerns. This makes it all the more gratifying to be a part of the solution that simplifies their workload. Those same end-users are also sharp! The real thrill often lies in surprising such users with a novel solution to a complicated problem. I enjoy being part of a team that is enthusiastic and committed. Working with talented colleagues provides opportunities to learn; both in technologies I’m not experienced with, as well as different approaches to tackling new challenges. That said, I still find I end up with the projects that don’t have the time or resources for oversight and deep involvement by my superiors. The development-focused (dare I say “meeting-free”?) nature of these independent projects can, at times, provide a nice break.

Listed skills include Apache, Perl, Ruby, Unix, and 49 others.
