The Maritime Employees Training Ltd. concept was jointly developed by the Maritime Union of Australia and industry employers as a response to a skill shortage of seafarers.During its first year of operation, METL invested over $1.5M in training and became the largest employer of Trainee seafarers in Australia.METL has developed effective partnerships with employers, registered training organisations, industry bodies, and regulators to ensure quality educational and employment outcomes.Our overarching objectives is to advance the productivity of the industry. We supply highly qualified seafarers to industry by providing effective skill development pathways for maritime employees.

Paddy Crumlin is a trade union leader with a global role in leading advocacy, campaigns and representation for transport and maritime workers' industrial, social and economic rights.As National Secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia, Paddy fights for the pay, conditions and political interests of Australian workers employed in the waterfront and seafaring industries.As President of the International Transport Workers Federation, Paddy takes a global leadership role in advocacy and campaigns for some of the world's most vulnerable workers, including international seafarers, dockers and transport workers.Paddy is a long-term advocate and proponent of Workers Capital; the responsible investment of workers' superannuation and pension funds and has held leadership positions with the Maritime Super fund and is Co-Chair of the Committee on Workers Capital, a global effort to coordinate investment policies that meet Environmental, Social and Governance targets to ensure workers' retirement funds are invested ethically and responsibly.
