Working within a traditional rehabilitation unit which had adjusted to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was involved in the assessment, treatment planning and discharge of patients, many of whom who had contracted COVID-19. I worked closely with the MDT as well as other physiotherapy and occupational therapy students to ensure that the lack of staff due to the pandemic did not limit the amount of therapy input patients were having. Myself and another physiotherapy student ran the physiotherapy services on two wards independently.

Neuro/Stroke RehabExperienced a demanding but rewarding role as a student physio on a busy inpatient acute stroke unit. I helped prioritise patients for myself and my colleagues whilst managing my own caseload. Created exercise and rehab plans for patients whilst taking part in rehab review meetings with other therapists and the patient’s families. Undertook training for and received NIHSS certificate.

This placement allowed me to become more independent in my practice and was brilliant for a second year placement. Myself and 3 other student physiotherapists designed our own assessment sheets, folders and other documentation for residents in the different areas of the home. We also created a weekly exercise class called ‘Walking with confidence’ which saw many residents take part and was a successful project.

Football is an area of Physiotherapy I would really like to work in one day. I was given the brilliant opportunity to work with the first team at Northampton Town FC (in the Sky Bet League 2). My role involved assisting with gym rehabilitation sessions for injured players, pre and post-match and training massage and assisting with pre-activation sessions. This was an incredible experience and gave me a different viewpoint as to the role of Physiotherapists away from an acute or care setting.

As a part-time job, I worked as a waiter in a local hotel mainly in the banqueting side of the hotel (e.g. weddings, themed evenings, conferences etc). I worked in a large team of people in which communication is vital for everything to run smoothly.

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to experience being a student Physiotherapist on placement in a care home setting. At an early stage in my training, this gave me a really good insight into the work that Physiotherapists do to help those with debilitating neurological conditions.
