The national Commander of the United Kingdom's Response Force Task Group, Commander of the Amphibious Task Force and Commander of the UK/NL Amphibious Task Group. - Deployed in Command of the Royal Navy Task Group to Norway for a winter exercise with the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps and with 3 Commando Brigade, Royal Marines to the Mediterranean to work alongside the French Navy in 2012 as part of the Combined Joint Expeditionary Force.- Deployed to the Gulf in 2013 and led exercises with 19 different nations, commanded of a total of 64 British and foreign warships and 3500 men and women as well as hosting a total 220 VIPs (at Presidential, Royal, Ministerial and Ambassadorial levels) during numerous Defence diplomacy and engagement events.- Elevated to CBE in HM The Queen’s Birthday Honours’ List.

Delivered the first Type 45 Destroyer, a new generational class of warship, into the Fleet, complexity, breaking new ground at every stage of this complex task.- Led a highly motivated and upbeat Ship’s Company through a very demanding trials programme, an intensive First of Class Operational Sea Training package and then deployed across the Atlantic to test this new ship during a major US Navy exercise.- Employed the insightful political acumen and exceptional presentational skills necessary to display and celebrate this new class of warship under intensive scrutiny and massive internal and external interest in the ship’s progress.

Transformed a declining organisation whose output was reducing in relevance and transformed it into a joint exercise and planning staff that facilitated attractive, highly beneficial multinational, tri-service collective training exercises.- Created the UK’s premier military Tier 2 exercise by completely redesigning the new JOINT WARRIOR format to widen its appeal to both Land and Air Force audiences and delivered joint, combined and single service training for air, naval and land forces through the execution of ‘live’ directed training exercises.

South Atlantic

During the gap between biannual JTEPS led exercises in 2008 was appointed Commander Joint Task Force for Operation Zest on Tristan da Cunha. - Given a demanding timeline, rapidly drew together a small, diverse team and through strong leadership and infectious enthusiasm garnered a highly effective unity of effort amongst a previously disparate grouping of organisations. - Rebuilt the island’s only re-supply harbour and avoided the requirement for a full evacuation. David Morley, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office-appointed Island Administrator at the time said of the Task Force's efforts: "The work that the Joint Task Force has carried out has saved our harbour and we are incredibly grateful. Not only have they worked long and hard hours without a complaint they have created a real bond with the community. Tristan Islanders have long memories and the wonderful relationship created between them and the Op ZEST Joint Task Force will remain for years."

Responsible for the delivery of the Royal Navy’s, NATO and non-NATO units' collective training. Directed, managed and delivered the conduct of Operational Sea Training to enhance individual ship’s Operational Capability. - Primus inter pares of a strong peer group and managed a training force of over 300 selected maritime specialists.- Led the training effort in 32 RN and 29 foreign warships during a 2 year appointment. - UK and international customers appreciated tact and style in delivering critical training.

Took command in Cape Town and maintained UK maritime presence off West Africa for 4 months, operating alone along that challenging coast to represent UK interests during visits and exercises with 8 different African nations. - Returning to UK, following 10 months included escorting the Dunkirk Little Ships across the English Channel, operating in the Norwegian Fjords and hosting the North Atlantic Council at sea.

- Joined the Royal Navy in 1982 straight from school and spent the next ten years either at sea or undertaking specialist training. - Qualifying as a Ship’s Diver Officer while still under training as a Midshipman at the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.- Achieved his first personal career goal by passing the highly demanding and physically intensive Mine Warfare and Clearance Diver Officer course (on the day he was promoted Lieutenant).- Deployed to the Gulf twice (88-89 and 90-91); he was Mentioned in Dispatches after clearing sea mines off Iraq during the First Gulf War. Early sea experience in frigates included a successful deployment to the West Indies as a Frigate Operations Officer and then serving on the Sixth Frigate Squadron Staff as the Squadron Operations Officer.
