Ceo/Chair

London, United Kingdom

Epic was the first public service youth mutual to spin out of local government, in 2014, delivering a range of children's and youth services for the marginalised communities of Kensington and Chelsea. I led Epic through an extremely challenging period, including reduction in core contract income of 65%, largely due to local authority funding cuts and decision to take services back in-house. This ultimately led to the decision to wind-up the organisation on a voluntary, solvent basis. Having met all its liabilities, Epic has been able to donate c. £40k to a range of local youth organisations, before finally closing.

Our approach and work included:• Acting as a catalyst, bringing people and organisations together in collaborative partnerships to address specific issues• Working directly with early-stage, innovative community-based organisations and projects• Providing and facilitating access to finance and funding• Supporting our partners with bespoke, ongoing strategic and organisational advice and expertise, building local/community capacity and capability• Experimenting and evaluating, and then integrating learning.During my time with OCG, I oversaw an increase in the funded and supported portfolio from two to seven projects. Projects covered a range of areas including community development, digital exclusion, early years/pre-school, and food insecurity. Our total initial grant funding, of just over £100k, has to-date helped to attract additional funding of more than 10x that amount.Alongside my project focussed work, I developed and actioned in-depth strategic and organisational plans; established OCG as a charitable company; wrote and submitted our application for charitable status (pending); developed and oversaw our governance and board arrangements inc. recruitment of our Advisory Council; and created a range of marketing materials and collateral in support of fundraising activities.See www.ourcommongood.org.uk.
