In 2019 I wrote a BBC News story about Marlin Jenkins, a formerly homeless man in the Bronx who went on to found a tech startup aimed at addressing the digital divide. This was a chance to look into how for low-income families, lack of internet access compounds their hardship in applying for jobs, welfare assistance, and dealing with banks and government bodies. It's the kind of story I became a journalist to tell.I’m also contributing editor of a brand new trans-Atlantic magazine, called The Signal.A few of my clips are here (via Google News): http://bit.ly/PBnewsclips.I’ve also written five short books for Routledge, on economics and social science themes.I contribute a tiny bit too for the Guardian, the Times Literary Supplement, the Irish Times, Telegraph, Independent, the Irish Independent, the Atlantic, the New Statesman, Prospect, Foreign Policy, the Spectator, S&P, Light Reading, and a smidgin of political analysis for Oxford Analytica. I've been appointed to serve as chair of the Quality Working Group, which gets at the heart of SLaM's work to make sure patient safety and care is continually improving. I have also helped to represent the Trust in the local community by taking part in the South London Listens events organised by Citizens UK. I've also taken part in a site visit to better understand the work and challenges of psychiatric intensive care units which work with children and adolescents.More broadly, the council of governors exercise oversight over the work of the non-executive directors, support the board of directors in setting the Trust's long-term vision, and sit as an informed, evenhanded friend, asking regularly for assurance and evidence of how SLaM is meeting those important goals. In Westminster, it is the secretariat for the All Party Parliamentary Group on Ireland and the Irish in Britain. As a board member, I've been able to serve as an independent critical friend in the organisation's governance. This has been at a time when its work is especially important because of the challenges from Brexit and Coronavirus - where Irish people in Britain are both more likely to be patients, and also more likely to be doctors, nurses, psychologists, and carers.
