For four years I worked as a Graduate Research Assistant. First at Cornell University while earning a MS in Biological & Environmental Engineering with a biogeochemistry focus and a thesis project on soil hydrology in the Pacific Northwest coastal temperate rainforest. Then as a PhD student in the Graduate Degree Program in Ecology at Colorado State University, working on life-cycle assessment of a forst bioenergy system. In that latter position I realized that life as an academic researcher was not for me and withdrew from the program.

For seven years I worked in ecological research. First for the USGS Western Ecological Research Center, then for the USFS Pacific Northwest Research Station. My work included field and laboratory research in silviculture, forest ecology, hydrology, and soils. Duties included leading field crews in roadless areas of southeast Alaska, operating and maintaining an environmental chemistry lab, and building and analyzing >million record datasets.
