Commissioner Travis Painter, appointed by D.C.’s Mayor Bowser in March of 2017, is a nationally certified sign language interpreter and global advocate for people with disabilities. He has led multiple teams in government agencies, interpreters in legal and medical settings, theatrical productions, aboard several cruise ships, the Obama White House, the Biden Administration, and the State Department. With a lifetime of passion for business development and finding creative solutions for a wide range of business needs, Travis has helped organizations achieve the next level of success, however they may define it.Featured on the front page of the Wall Street Journal in 2014, he spread awareness of the accessibility field by discussing the complexities of interpreting at high-level events. After the article was released, Painter spoke at Gallaudet University and was asked to participate in several workshops and ethics panels.After serving at the Library of Congress as the first Director of Accessibility until 2018, he began working with Overseas Interpreting, eventually becoming Deputy Managing Director. Painter then began working at the U.S. State Department while finishing his master's degree at Harvard. His business expertise and formal education as an organizational psychologist led to an overseas State Department appointment. Creating and implementing the first Foreign Service Officer position as an overseas sign language interpreter will have a worldwide impact on accessibility. While assisting companies and agencies in reaching their full potential, Painter is currently working to complete his PhD in Organizational Psychology.
