In my role as Branch Manager at Homebase, I was presented with the challenge of leading an underperforming and non-compliant store through a major turnaround strategy. Operations ManagerI operated to an exceptional standard in this position, playing an instrumental role in the daily operation of a £6m business unit in addition to managing a sales team generating £1.2m annually. I was fully responsible for overseeing the performance of a diverse team of 29 personnel, motivating them to consistently meet and exceed demanding productivity targets. I analysed the output of team members through conducting detailed performance appraisals, identifying issues of concern and organising training and professional development for personnel as required.I was tasked with meeting the core business objective of the store, becoming the top performing branch within this difficult and challenging climate in addition to overseeing the constant surpassing of annual sales targets, for example the 2010 objective was exceeded by £100K.2009 - 2011: Deputy Manager/Customer Service ManagerI strived to ensure the provision of extensive support to personnel in relation to realising their professional potential, for example, coaching a Customer Service Assistant to Shop floor Supervisor role. As a stock manager my duties were to manage 600 lines from around 30 suppliers. This required me to communicate with suppliers, branches and distribution centres. I found this placement very challenging and enhanced my organisational and communication skills. The knowledge on a theoretical base, which I had gained during my time in university, was very useful in helping me manage my stock flow from suppliers to distributions centres in a logical and smooth flow. During my time at Booker it required me to manage promotional events, where it was necessary for me to have enough stock in the distribution centre to meet the offer during the event. Their was a number of aspects to be taken in to account for example because the stock I managed was food which had sell by dates, which meant I needed to determine how much stock I needed, how long the shelf life was, the order turn over and the delivery lead time windows. At the time of my placement year at Booker they were in the process of closing 2 major distribution centres, which I took part in the project, by allocating the stock from the closing sites to other active distribution centres. I also gained experience by working in the Christmas and New Year period, which are the most demanding period in the food industry. It was necessary for me to manage my stock around my supplier’s shutdowns and have enough stock in the distribution centre to cover the Christmas period. This period is very tense and stressful for the food industry and it was very good experience for me to work under pressure in order to meet demand in the period.
