I have always felt a drive to create, to tell stories and to connect with people. Throughout my academic and professional careers, I’ve honed the ability to communicate effectively to different audiences, from university professors to third graders. Being proficient in three languages – English, Punjabi and French – has been a great asset in connecting with people of various backgrounds and ages. Language and how we communicate has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. This passion for language drove me to pursue a double major in English and French language studies, with a concentration in French linguistics, during my undergraduate degree. The trajectory of my career journey has not exactly been a straight line. I once considered education to be my calling, but through classroom experience I learned that though I do hold an interest for teaching, I wanted to create an impact in the lives of others in a different way. While pursuing a career in teaching, I expanded my knowledge about equity, diversity and inclusion, both within the classroom and beyond it as well. I learned the importance of differentiated communication and how to consider the diverse points of view of the people with which I came in contact. I was also able to advance my language skills and achieve the Certificate of French Language Proficiency from the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education. In my chosen field of public relations and communications, I feel a sense of belonging and purpose that had not really felt prior to enrolling in the public relations graduate certificate program at Centennial College. I have found my voice and the medium through which I can create an impact. I hope to create, to write and communicate in way that has value and has impact, no matter how small. I want to inspire emotions, encourage thoughts or even change opinions. I want to tell the stories of the people and the world around me, and by doing so tell my story as well.
