Responsibilities included audiologic screening, assessment and ongoing monitoring of hearing sensitivity and middle ear function in children at risk for hearing loss or having hearing loss. This population evidenced communication disorders, congenital disorders, and at-risk medical histories. Other emphasis included bilingual consultation with parents, teachers, and physicians regarding the children’s auditory function; education of families and staff regarding effects of hearing loss and middle ear dysfunction, and collaboration with educational staff regarding classroom management strategies. Referral to school and community resources for habilitation, remediation and assessments were also provided to community children during Arizona “Child Find” activities. Translation of report summaries and educational materials into Spanish was coordinated. Arizona school hearing screening procedures, rules and regulations, as well as use of equipment was taught to district registered nurses. Acted as clinical practicum supervisor for Masters level audiology students from the University of Arizona Speech and Hearing Science Program. Participated as a professional parent education consultant for the “Parents As Teachers” program, teaching child development, and ways for parents to assist their children’s development to parents of “at risk” children in the home setting. Registered Nurse on the OB-GYN unitNeonatal Nurse Practitioner in the Level II Neonatal Nursery and Infant Nursery. Provided medical management for a group of infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, under the direction of the Pediatric Chief of Staff, in collaboration with the infants’ attending Pediatricians. Responsibilities included patient management, family advocacy and education, referral to appropriate agencies, specialists, inservice education and clinical supervision of 45 staff nurses. Developed and implemented the first intermediate, (Level II), neonatal intensive care unit in Arizona. Assisted in the development of the Level III to Level II NICU transport program for returning convalescing neonates to community hospitals. Emphasized patient management, parent education and collaboration with nursing and medical staff. Developed and taught courses in neonatal care to registered nurses, nurse practitioner students and medical staff from area hospitals. Courses were taught in lecture format with discussion of appropriate clinical cases to accentuate didactic theory. Clinical laboratory experiences in infant resuscitation and chest tube placement were developed and taught to medical staff for continuing medical education credit.

ProgramLectured on various topics related to the premature infant, family crisis, and support. Administered Arizona State Department of Health Services examinations for Midwife candidates in the areas of neonatal examination and resuscitation. Acted as the Phoenix area practicum instructor for Neonatal Nurse Practitioner students from the University of Arizona College of Nursing.
