I have 19 years experience in the field of natural products isolating and preserving microbes (actinomycetes) from marine and under surveyed terrestrial environments. I have done fermentations on the microbial library under different growth conditions to create a library that now contains over 45,000 extracts. I'm always looking for new ways to isolate unique genera and species with the potential to produce interesting, new and, biologically active molecules. In addition to generating a massive natural product extract library, I follow up with active hits by fermenting on large scale and doing purification to identify the active molecule. The foundation I created for the library has easily allowed us to go back and find strains isolated over 18 years ago. This library has gone on to grow into the Natural Product Discovery Core at the University of Michigan where we work with academic and industrial partners to screen and purify molecules of interest. This core was established 3 years ago specifically to make use of this library.
