I am a neurodevelopmental physiotherapist in private practice in the Cape Town. My approach to physiotherapy is guided by the principles of family led function focused intervention.I see babies and children, either at home or at my studio in Plumstead. My focus is on using my skills as a physiotherapist to help parents to provide their baby, toddler or child with the best possible environment to promote gross and fine motor skills, including handwriting. To this end I work closely with the parents, child and teacher to identify goals and find ways to achieve these goals, including detailed home programs.I also incorporate elements of mindfulness and mindful movement into my work with children as an effective way to improve children's attention and self-regulation abilities. I am also the developer of Handwriting Gym a new approach to teaching handwriting based on motor learning principles and the development of the basic graphic skills needed for forming letters. My work provides teacher's and therapists with the knowledge and practical skills for improving the teaching of basic graphic skills and handwriting and implementing remedial action before handwriting difficulties start to impact on a learner's academic achievements. Learning to write is still a stumbling block for many children and some of the blame lies in outdated teaching practices and especially the overuse of worksheets that emphasise tracing of letters and which present letters as pictures to be copied.The Handwriting Gym website is a comprehensive resource for teachers covering assessment, teaching and remedial intervention of basic graphic skills and early handwriting.
