The smallest changes can send shockwaves through the system, but only if you dig deep into the particulars.Back in 2008, I worked as a Site Operations Support Analyst in the oil and gas industry. 2 years prior, I made designs that won bids.Designs easy to manufacture, for clients such as L'Oreal + made life easier for the end-users.Still, I sought to connect directly with clients. It took me a year to land a coveted spot on the Tier 2 team as a Support Analyst. It was a fast-moving, complex game, and I couldn’t get enough.I worked on small projects, where I got to diagnose problems and bring solutions to life.( It was like speed dating but with problems.) Yet, all these seemingly minor projects were the perfect training for the major task ahead: ➝ transitioning all our stations to a new business model. We were given 1hr to complete the task. I sat there watching automation eat up my time. It's like putting your dishes in the dishwasher, then sitting in front of it until it's done.It didn't seem practical to me.So, my solution was simple:– STOP supervising and start streamlining. Could I optimize the process to run concurrently rather than following a wait-and-watch approach?I checked in with my more senior colleagues (some of them with a degree in computer science) to:Mitigate any risks. Then, I put it to the test.I wanted to show the team that it works. Our manager soon gave the 🟢 light to implement the change across the board. It led to a reduced processing time.➝ From an hour to 15 minutes.Leaving -a luxurious- 45 minutes to fix any mistakes that might have come up.It meant the business could reopen much faster. 🌊 We created a ripple effect. My designer's mindset is an integral part of me.It follows me in any role I take on.It allows me to build a rich context➝ around a problem➝ superimpose different perspectives, and ➝ spot the issues that disrupt harmony between people and tools. It allows me spot details because they matter.I’ve seen it in every role I was contributing to.Sometimes, it’s saving the company from unnecessary (+ 💲costly) cash register replacements JUST by asking about the color of the logo on the cash registers. So that people would realize there was actually 0 power to the units…My job is to show you what ripple effects these "small" changes could set in motion. If your team values:- Intuition- Innovation - Designer mindset, and- Shaking up the status quo📥 Reach out to me via direct message.
