When I was a college English major, my favorite professor said, “Grammar is sexist. We have to live with it.” I’ve been challenging patriarchal assumptions ever since. Those ideas were created deliberately—and they can be undone. It’s an approach I bring to editing any topic.I ease nonfiction authors' fears of editing while addressing relics of the patriarchy. I edit books for indie authors and publishers on such topics as craftivism, virtual meetings, personal finance, and physical activity (equity and diversity, aging, weightlifting for large women, yoga, dance, race studies, and more [both academic and trade]). Before opening my editing business, I worked in public health directorial positions at state health agencies and national nonprofit associations. Writing and editing were built into all those jobs.My line edits help authors* break away from clichés based on sex, race, size, ability, sexual orientation, gender expression, and intersectional identities;* take the worry out of punctuation, capitalization, and spelling;* reduce wordiness at the sentence level;* identify passages that aren't quite resonating; and* connect with their audience.You and I confer on the extensiveness of the editing you want, whether it’s copyediting (for which inclusive language is standard), larger structural issues, or something in between.Although my experience is mostly nonfiction, I am open to fiction that is cozy mystery or feminist romance. I also edit publications for nonprofits promoting equity and social justice. I've edited several health-related textbooks and trade books.My interests include embroidery stitch-ups with bad^ss women, board games, walking, and book club (also with bad^ss women). I like penguins, and I follow scientists who study birds. I do the crossword daily. I like British comedians and quiz shows. I’m married to an extraordinary man, and together we have two extraordinary sons. All of them call out racism, sexism, bullying, and other bad behaviors. (N.B. The ^ is for the bot censors, not for you.)I earned a professional certificate in editing from University of Chicago and have thoroughly studied _The Chicago Manual of Style_ with expert instructors. I also use APA 7th edition, which has a thoughtful section on bias-free language.Let’s upend the patriarchy.
