Here's a case study of what I accomplished by running an A/B split test on the primary landing page:New Order Button Increases Conversion Rates by 39%, Resulting in $904,470 in Saved Ad SpendAn online background check service needed an edge against the 200 other Internet advertisers bidding on its primary keywords in Google AdWords. The company knew it needed to do website testing, but the last two attempts at conversion testing had gotten bogged down in overly-complex testing tools and internal resistance. After several failed attempts, the ecommerce company was almost ready to give up and just accept the high prices of pay per click advertising. I proposed a super-simple A/B split test for the landing page, using nothing more than Google Website Optimizer. The only element tested on the landing page was the “buy” button. I created the new button in Photoshop according to website conversion best practices. Then I gave the company web developer detailed instructions on how to create the alternate landing page, and set up the conversion experiment in Google Optimizer. The website optimization test was designed and set up within one business day. The web developer was able to install the code within an hour. The results of the test were staggering. The new button generated a 39.1% improvement over the old landing page. The new order button was incorporated into not only the primary landing page, but into all the other conversion pages for the company. The online retailer saved $904,470 in annual ad spend thanks to the new button. Best of all, the ecommerce company was sold on the benefits of simple, ongoing testing. The results of that website test was rolled out into all the pay per click campaigns - to Google AdWords, Yahoo Search, Bing and other second-tier ppc networks.
