In an era where generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is reshaping educational landscapes and industry standards, I've been honored to step into the role of AI Thought Leader alongside my esteemed colleague, Kent Peel, at Seneca Polytechnic. This eight-month graduate certificate program focuses on the application and long-term economic, environmental and social value of sustainability in business.I also teach course SMB703 - Sustainable Management and SMB804 - Integrated Sustainability Proposal, which is essentially the capstone project of the program.

I currently teach the SFIN6012 - (Sustainable) Business Design course of the Strategic Foresight & Innovation program. Advanced business modeling concepts are introduced and the intersection with innovation processes is explored. Working in groups, students have the opportunity to develop and practice their integrative problem-solving skills in a real-world situation, as they address the challenges presented by client organizations.

In 2010 I founded Close the Loop to cover a need in the market for comprehensive and holistic sustainability consulting services. Back then many companies regarded sustainability or CSR as a philanthropy and PR add-on. Today, this approach misses the huge sustainability opportunities that more and more smart companies are seizing (cost savings, stakeholder trust, competitiveness) and often backfires and results in significant risks (e.g. greenwashing, bad publicity, unnecessary costs). Close the Loop’s goal is to provide sustainability services that have a clear added value, a strong business case, and can significantly improve the competitiveness and viability of its clients. Our difference is the systemic approach which provides clarity in complexity and helps design effective improvement actions. It is the cornerstone of my sustainability research, and the secret behind our name: closed (feedback) loops are found in all systems and are crucial to the survival of organizations. Eco-Ethonomics Inc. is a groundbreaking consulting firm that leverages cross-sector expertise to provide strategic advice, foster collaboration and facilitate cultural change in order to combine social, environmental and business objectives. Working at Eco-Ethonomics gave me the opportunity to gain more experience in the social aspects of sustainability to better complement my environmental sustainability background. ✔ Designed assessment methodology and developed interactive, online stakeholder and social network maps to improve the partnerships of the Ontario Food Collaborative, using the Kumu online platform. ✔Conducted quantitative and qualitative research in collaborative research projects on CSR, food security, social impact and collaborative development✔ Designed research methodology and data collection tools, including online surveys, focus groups and key informant interviews.✔Performed market research to identify research RFPs and prepared relevant proposals.

I was invited by GRI to be one of two quality control consultants responsible for auditing and evaluating training providers that offered GRI training programs in Greece.

Systems Engineering and Management (SEM) is an interdisciplinary program offered by: ➊ The Department of Civil Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace and ➋ The Department of Business Management &Administration, University of Macedonia. ✑“B1/C7 - Project Management for Sustainable Development”Full responsibility for organising and teaching for 8 consecutive years th 39-hrs course (lectures/workshops). Presentation of the basic concepts (1) of project management regarding projects as complex societal systems and (2) of project sustainability using a systems approach for dealing with interactions between environmental, social and economic systems.✑“S1 - Systems Engineering Principles”Full responsibility for organising the 39-hrs course and co-teaching it (26 of the 39 hrs). Presentation of the basic concepts of the Systems and Cybernetic Approach, Systems Engineering, as well as the Viable System Model for organisational diagnosis and design. Application to complex multidisciplinary engineering and management problems.Since these were graduate courses, they were both taught in a dialectic style more akin to a seminar. They both involved project assignments with real-life examples of companies and organizations. The goal was to challenge the mental models of students to be more open to the thinking required for project management and sustainability. ✑"S3 - Systems Engineering Design Project"This course involves the completion of a group project relating to engineering design. In the Fall 2009 term, I supervised a group of three students that conducted a project titled “Operational program for the development of less-favoured areas”.✑ Dissertation SupervisionI supervised 5 graduate dissertations on EColabels, sutainable construction, life cycle assessment and the Viable System Model. I was also ad-hoc supervisor to two PhD dissertations.

As a postdoctoral fellow at the Democritus University of Thrace, I was awarded a €140K European Union funded project, titled “Ecolabel Decision Support System”, through a highly competitive process. I was the sole author of the proposal, which was evaluated by an International Experts committee, the Principal Investigator as well as the Project Manager (technical and administrative). I led a highly competent team including an Assistant Professor, a postdoc fellow and post-graduate students. EDSS is an innovative online, interactive tool that can help a company or an organisation choose the most appropriate Ecolabel, among the 400+ available internationally. It uses more than 30 assessment criteria that reflect the business strategy and the organisational capacity of the organisation/user. EDSS is capable of suggesting the appropriate Ecolabel either for a specific product/service (e.g. bricks, aluminium portals), for infrastructures, or for an organization/company as a whole. Ecolabels refer to both Social and Environmental aspects and to one or more stages of the life cycle.Part of the project scope was:✔ the design of the research methodology, ✔conducting stakeholder interviews, and ✔prototype testing with potential companies/users.It also involved result dissemination and awareness activities including:✔organization of two conferences on ecolabels, ✔organization of a professional workshop and webinar on ecolabels, with participation from the business, academia and public sector companies. Two postgraduate dissertations were also based on the EDSS.

The Chamber of Environment and Sustainability is one of the main organizations promoting sustainable development in Greece through the dissemination of relevant scientific knowledge and policies. I was involved in the following projects: ✔Sustainability appraisal of Wind Farm in Cyprus.✔Project Manager of research team working on sustainability of Wind Farms in Greece.

OECD’s Green Growth and Eco-innovation Project aimed at understanding the nature of eco-innovation and advise OECD’s Green Growth Strategy developers. ✔Responsible for identifying and assessing eco-innovations case-studies from Greece as a member of the Evaluation Committee. ✔Organised press-conference to present Greek eco-innovation cases ✔Interviewed by public radio station to present the project ✔Invited to participate in the project’s conference The future of Eco-Innovation: The role of business models in green transformation - Summary and Presentations in Copenhagen.The project’s outcome was the report “Why New Business Models Matter for Green Growth”.

The aim of the IPMA International Project Excellence Award is to increase the recognition of projects from different countries, different industries and different organisations and to motivate project teams to develop and improve project management. It supports professional project management in achieving high performance and identifies projects as examples of excellent project management. By rewarding teams that prove their success in project management, IPMA recognizes and acknowledges excellent and innovative projects.✔Member of an international team of assessors for the IPMA Project Excellence Award. ✔The assessed project was a multimillion natural gas extraction project in Qatar, operated by a multinational company

I started my teaching career as a part-time lecturer at the Environmental Engineering Department, Democritus University of Thrace (DUTh). I was very excited to teach the 1st year undergraduate elective course "Principles of Systems Sciences", as this course played a pivotal role in my career when I was studying in the same department. I believe this was one of the most basic courses for Environmental Engineers as it presented an overview of (1) the systems approach and (2) sustainable development, thus providing students with the necessary foundations and context for the whole undergraduate program. The learning outcomes of the course were that students would be able to: • appreciate the value of the systems approach in dealing with complex problems • understand basic systemic concepts (e.g. control, boundary, hierarchy, input, output)• build simple systemic models• use systemic concepts to explain sustainability and sustainable development issues. Students were evaluated by written exams but also by four assignments that involved applying the concepts presented in class on a specific project and gradually build up a systemic model.

-Teaching the Undergraduate Course “Principles of Systems Sciences”. The course focuses on the basic principle of systems and cybernetics science and their application in understanding sustainable development issues.
