I teach a course titled, "The Art of Opinion Writing," for the Department of Media, Journalism and Film in the Cathy Hughes School of Communication at Howard University.The Art of Opinion Writing is a course intended to give voice and life to the news, circumstances and cultural moments that surround us every day. To better understand the world around us and to help others do the same, we must exercise our ability to provide context and perspective to significant cultural and political events that impact our existence. Opinion writing, and the sharing of thoughts and ideas as they exist within our frames of reference, ensure that our voices, perspectives and ideas have an opportunity to impact culture. Through personal essays, criticism, review, and reaction pieces, this course explores the various ways that opinion writing can be an effective journalistic tool by emphasizing clear, cogent, creative, voice-heavy writing. Class sessions will include guest speakers (where appropriate), discussions of cultural events and workshopping assigned pieces with a heavy emphasis on methods and tools for developing a voice and brand as a writer.
