Chief Technology OfficerSkipperi Aug 2019 - PresentHelsinki, FiIt’s been quite a journey so far.We have taken a quickly-hacked-together prototype (to test if there's a market, operating in Finland for one season) and turned it into an international, scalable business after trying out a few different routes.Initially, it all started with a peer-to-peer platform. Then, we built a new joyful membership-based boat sharing business next to the original idea: Skipperi Fleet (previously kaupunkiveneet in Finnish). Currently we operate our own fleets in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, New Zealand and Canada. The latest endeavour is to offer our platform to our partners wanting to run their own boat club in the United States and the European market.I am glad about what we have achieved with such a small team. Technologically speaking, the initial prototype has turned into a grown-up platform consisting of APIs, multiple front-end clients (both public & internal), a React Native application (iOS, Android) and hundreds of actual Internet-connected boats. Looking forward to the next leaps :-)Some high-level buzzwords: sharing economy, platforms, P2P, international payments, identification/KYC, RPA, IoT, ML, CMS, community building, happiness.

I did not need to do any wasteful work meaning I could focus on what is actually important for our clients and our company.I had the opportunity to do a bunch of different projects, ranging from scaling a legacy code base infused with headache causing obscurity to building modern front-end projects which utilised the latest technologies available. Of course, what comes to projects, technology only plays one part in the grand scheme of things. Also enjoyed sales, i.e. helping people.Our clients = great people. I met and worked with warm, ambitious and innovative personalities. This is something I am really glad about :-)Oh, and the teaching at Metropolia continued. It was a pleasure to run courses such as “Modern Web Development with JavaScript” (with my dear colleague Pekkis) and “Practical Software Production”.Some tech buzzwords: JavaScript, React, React Native, Redux, Node, TypeScript, Scala, Play, PHP, Symfony, Silex, Python, Django.

I had thought about it for a while and wanted to benefit from my year of "lay-off” (i.e. non-military service). Thanks to some great people working at Metropolia, I got a chance to try it.My intent for the lessons was to share up-to-date experiences and answer the questions that had puzzled myself when studying: what does a software developer actually do during an ordinary day and what kind of things are important to learn. The software production course covered e.g. the following subjects: Agile/Scrum, software projects in general, revision control, TDD, best practices and coding standards.In addition to running the courses, I was a part of a small development team developing internal systems for the school. The development was done with PHP. I also introduced the team to Symfony and the ecosystem around it. -

And as it was a small company, you got to do a range of different things. I will list some of them.- I built multiple versions of the company’s web site. The site got a new look and inner workings (built on PHP) almost every other year. Although I have to say that Internet and its role looked a bit different back when the company was started- “Branding”. Graphic design of marketing materials such as brochures, articles etc.- Basic customer service. Did not really participate in sales- Making the products (mostly technical precision measurement instruments) ready for customers.Probably learned at least something about entrepreneurship :-)
