About Juan "Papo" Santiago

I am a cultural keeper and coalition builder in New York City for Arts, Social Services and Higher Ed. Currently, I am the Community Development Coordinator for At the Table, a nonprofit dedicated to providing college access/success, tutoring, and advisement for students who have experienced foster care and orphanhood in NYC. I support grant development, write a semi-annual newsletter for staff and students, help facilitate community conversations with partners, and provide program support for the cause.Previously, as Coordinator of the Community Navigator Program at Hunter College Silberman School of Social Work, I served as a consultant for East/West Harlem and South Bronx community matters to 4 Directors and was part of at least 10 community stakeholder groups. We evolved into an Institute and shared our field experience lessons in developing a peer workforce citywide. As co-founder of Capicu Culture and La Sopa NYC: The Capicu School of Poetic Arts, we have maintained over 16 years of uplifting community voices via a reading series and workshops in the Nuyorican and Black Arts traditions. Our social practice artistic model calls for art to be: Functional toward positive change, Committed to the whole of our community, and Collective- derived from the aspirations of the creative community we serve.

At the Table is a 501(c)(3) that pairs present and incoming college students currently and formerly in foster care in New York City with long-term full-time 1:1 tutors who double as skilled and trusted advisors in navigating life during college. We also train, advise, and support our peer organizations and staff working with students of all ages at the intersection of the education and child welfare systems.I work closely with the Operations and Leadership teams to build the organization's community of support, both externally and internally. I develop programmatic partnerships with community-based organizations and agencies. • Hunter College
Program Coordinator - Community Navigator Program
    Hunter College Jul 2017 - Jul 2022

In 2017, Hunter College’s Silberman School of Social Work initiated the Community Navigator Program with the assistance of the CUNY Institute for State and Local Governance (ISLG) and the technical assistance providers for the Criminal Justice Investment Initiative (CJII). The program developed a network of Navigators using a peer model who connect with and guide individuals to ensure that they can access the resources and services needed. This promoted greater use of existing resources in New York City, and improved outcomes for victims of crime, youth and young adults and people leaving incarceration.I was responsible for connecting programs with diverse Community Based Organizations (CBOs), city agencies and institutions. Through visits, calls, and emails, I initiated outreach efforts to introduce our programs. I facilitated meetings between CNP Management and CBO representatives, ensuring a seamless introduction of our initiatives. Additionally, I actively nurtured relationships with grassroots stakeholders and community organizers, maintaining continuous informal communication channels to foster ongoing engagement.I was responsible for the recruitment and onboarding of peer staff. I recommended and developed trauma-informed strategies, policies and procedures to effectively optimize program operations within an emerging peer model. Additionally, I facilitated connections between our host institution, Silberman School of Social Work, the Research Foundation of CUNY, and provided vital support to our Directors in engaging with the funder for the Criminal Justice Investment initiative.
