My primary responsibilities were to aid in the teaching of second year undergraduate physicists, and natural scientists, in basic programming using Java.It was a rewarding experience being able to help and encourage those struggling, and demystify what they perceived quite complex. I hope I also sparked interest into the many students I helped.I was awarded by the department for my ability and interaction with the students.Though most of my time was aiding in teaching programming; I was also involved in helping students understand particle physics, and marking their coursework.

As an ambassador for the department, I had to have a strong working knowledge of how our department worked, the details of all our degree schemes, and the physics research that Lancaster does.I would take potential applicants, and their parents, on tours of our department; answering all their questions without sugar-coating the information, and sharing some of our research.I had always received glowing feedback, and I believe I have inspired many to find the university that is right for the applicant.

Alongside my usual research, I spent almost a year out onsite at SNOLAB, one of the world’s deepest and cleanest laboratories; being part world leading science.SNOLAB is 2km underground, in an active nickel mine outside Sudbury, ON, Canada. I am a collaborator of the SNO+ experiment, based at SNOLAB, the successor to the Nobel Prize winning SNO experiment.Few experiments have no problems or delays; SNO+ was delayed for many reasons including leaks in the wall of our cavity. I was part of the team that checked the integrity of the wall lining, and patched all potential leak candidates. Personally, I helped find, test, and determine one of the larger leaks in the wall lining.SNO+ is reusing and refurbishing the old SNO detector; one of my responsibilities was to repair and replace the photomultiplier tubes that, for a plethora of reasons, were no longer functioning by the end of SNO.I got involved with the installation of the fibre optical calibration systems. By the end, I was the onsite point man, and I lead the efforts for the fibre installation teams.Most my work underground was part of the teams that entered the confined space of the SNO+ cavity. Not only as a worker in the cavity, but as an attendant to the confined space. Safety was paramount, it can be life of death if something goes very wrong. We were all highly trained in safety and rescue, which was put to the test.I was a respected member of our onsite teams, and I highly respect all those I worked with whilst at SNOLAB.
