Dating services in the Netherlands were under the supervision of the Ministry of Justice in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. In those days a relational agency still needed a licence to introduce singles to each other. Intermediaries were checked for sexual aberrations and the police checked if they had been in prison. An eye was kept on the mediation costs as well; dating services for first match could not be too expensive. It was not allowed to make too much profit. With the help of the authorities many singles found themselves a husband or wife, and they got to know each under the supervision of a sound expert. It led to order in our so happily organized society. The two partners were often called a couple. That way many long-lasting marriages were arranged. People were looking for the big happiness of love. In those days it was customary for people to become engaged before they got married. In this loving society very few people lived together without being married. As a rule they kept living with their parents until their wedding day. The period of engagement generally lasted about one year. And there could be no engagement without an engagement ring which was later replaced by a wedding ring. Money was put aside for the hope chest. There was no end to this bliss. A relationship, a meeting was considered as something very serious. In popular speech it was called ‘pairing people off’. This was often done by individual persons, for instance, an acquaintance, a mutual friend or a relative. A relationship that had come about this way was also called a steady relationship. A loose relationship in those days was more like what is called a one-night-stand today, which is a short, one-time sexual contact between two individuals, at least one of whom has no plans for starting a long-term sexual relationship.
