As part of the MSc thesis, I conducted lab-scale investigations into assessing the potential of eliminating the need for external air supply to the wastewater treatment processes. The idea was to harness the photo-oxidation potential of green-coloured algae in carrying out the activated sludge process. By developing a consortium of algae and activated sludge bacteria, I investigated the effect of external illumination in order to check the oxygen supply by algae for the respiration of activated sludge bacteria. It was successfully proved that using artificial illumination and by combing algae with the activated sludge bacteria, the activated sludge process could be carried out without external aeration. This is one of the innovative steps being researched to reduce the need for high energy input into the conventional treatment technologies of our wastewaters.

I was performing the role of an environmental engineering consultant looking into the wastewater treatment operations of industrial clients based in several locations of India. The activities performed under this role included conducting audit of existing system, providing process support to mitigate short-comings in operation, brownfield and greenfield projects with regards to wastewater treatment plants.
