Mumbai Area, India

Managing resolution of Non Performing Assets of State Bank of India through the legal process of the country was my role in this assignment. I was leading a force of 3000+ and together we modified our methodology, strategy and stance vis a vis the defaulting borrowers. New SOPs and software solutions were put in place. A whole new Manual was created with a road-map for future. The new ways ensured that SBI recovered substantial sums out of NPAs both current and written off accounts every year.

Mumbai Area, India

In this role I was responsible for the Project finance portfolio of State Bank of India. This involved appraisal, funding, monitoring and overseeing of very large (>Rs. 500 crores) Industrial, Infrastructure and other commercial projects . Our small team of specialists was steering projects worth about Rs. 2 lakh crores where our share of funding was approx 30%. These were tough times for Projects as many were stalled due to lack of approvals from Government Authorities. We represented State Bank of India, nay, the PSB lenders' community, in most of the Infrastructure related Committees constituted by Government Authorities to give a fillip to these projects.

Hyderabad Area, India

As Head of Mid Corporate Group (borrowers with Credit Limits above Rs.10 crores but less than Rs. 500 crores) of SBI in Andhra Pradesh, I oversaw the business of our Mid Corporate Branches with particular emphasis on the health of the portfolio. I also headed a small team of Officers with technical back ground to create a software package for managing the credit portfolio of these Branches. This package ultimately morphed into what is today known in the Bank as Loan Lifecycle Management System.

Indore Area, India

In this role as Head of the only Mid Corporate Group (borrowers with Credit Limits above Rs.10 crores but less than Rs. 500 crores) Branch of SBI in Madhya Pradesh, we arranged appraisal, funding, monitoring and overseeing of Eighty Five large Working Capital Accounts and Project Finances arranged by the Bank. This involved ground level monitoring of the units and interactions with the upper echelons of entrepreneurs and industrialists of Madhya Pradesh.

Singapore

Heading an Offshore Banking Unit (OBU) is like running a small Bank with a fairly large balance sheet. You find Resources to invest in Assets from around the world and look for quality Assets to invest these resources in a manner that maximizes the yield. There can be no mismatch and if at all there are, your dealers make sure that the mismatches are covered. It is quite an interesting experience. We could tweak a few things in the Unit and expanded it to open a new Exchange House. This opened a new window of remittances for the expat community in Singapore which was also the first expansion of the Bank's footprint in Singapore. We could also increase the size of our OBU to US$1 Bn.

Bahrain

Going to SBI's OBU Bahrain as Manager, Syndication and Marketing was my first foray into International Finance. I was also holding the number 2 position in the OBU. This un it of the Bank had incurred losses due to some incidents in the past. We increased business levels by opening new connections and upgrading existing ones. We also opened Branches in neighboring countries like Oman and Saudi Arabia. All this resulted in the operations turning profitable. OBU's Balance Sheet strengthened with the additional business and profits
