CurrentExciting opportunity to work on biodiversity conservation in Africa, responsible for UAV and remote sensing technology and modelling with particular focus on affordability. As funding for management of protected areas in Africa is often poor, our aim is to develop a tool for efficient monitoring, primarily based on free and open-source products. Since the application of thermal imagery in surveying diurnal wildlife in tropical and subtropical has indicated the limits of this technology, we are looking into alternative sensors and techniques for the detection and identification of wildlife (mammals) in nature. Aerial surveys will be conducted using autonomous, VTOL capable, long-range drone to meet the requirements of managers of large (and poorly accessible) protected areas.
