About Pascal Muller

I have a passion for complex systems and technology in general. I love to work on complex (software) projects that help end-users to do amazing things every day.I've worked as a developer, designer and architect in complex software projects. I love the technical challenges and acquiring domain knowledge. The last couple of years I found that getting requirements right, understanding how requirements support business and engaging stakeholders are often just as important for the success of projects. The last couple of years my responsibilities in these areas have slowly expanded and I've worked as IT Business Consultant. I'd love to further develop all these skills and am therefore looking for projects where I can spend my time on a combination of technical challenges, but also gathering requirements, understanding business processes and engaging stakeholders.

    Barendrecht
ICT Group is a leading industrial technology solutions and services provider in the Netherlands. Their solutions involve realising system solutions on project basis and the secondment of experienced and highly educated staff. I have been seconded to Europe Container Terminals (ECT), the leading container terminal operator in Europe. It handles a vast majority of all the containers passing through the port of Rotterdam. At the ECT Delta Terminal, containers are automatically transported between quay and stack by a fleet of over 200 Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). The stacks are operated by almost 140 Automated Stacking Cranes (ASCs).I was part of the team that maintains and optimises the Process Control System that controls this automatic equipment and is responsible for the performance of the terminal.
  • Ret
    It Business Consultant Techniek
    Ret Aug 2023 - Dec 2023
RET provides regional public transport (OV) in the Rotterdam region. RET is responsible for the timetable and the execution of journeys (Operation), but also maintains all infrastructure and vehicles (Technology). As an IT Business Consultant Technology, I was the link between the Technology departments and the IT department of the RET. In this role I had a number of tasks, including: * Preparation of Business Impact Analyses (BIAs) and Project Start Architectures (PSAs) in consultation with stakeholders. * Analyzed and answered questions from the business. Where necessary, (unsolicited) advice was given. * Preparation of documentation for a tender. * Acted as a process supervisor in an internal software development project.I have taken these actions: * Established multiple BIAs and PSAs and guided them through the processes that allowed projects to start. * Analyzed and answered questions from the business. Where necessary, advice was given and elaborated.* Inventoried requirements and wishes for a tender. I have prepared the first version of the documentation. * As a process supervisor I supervised an internal software development process from concept to implementation. I did this by making a schedule, monitoring the progress and addressing the challenges during the process.
  • Ect Rotterdam (Europe Container Terminals)
    Architect Tos Migration Project
Ect Rotterdam (Europe Container Terminals) Nov 2022 - Jul 2023
ECT operates the ECT Delta Terminal on the Maasvlakte. At this large and highly automated container terminal a lot of containers are handled. At ICT, a team is responsible for maintaining and extending software that is involved in their day-to-day operational processes. This software takes care of making loading/discharge plans, controlling the equipment and administrating container moves. ECT made new decisions about their future application landscape and a project was started to make the changes needed. In a previous assignment I acted as a external advisor to work on a plan to move forward. The development team indicated that an architect was needed to monitor the technical execution of these plans. I was asked to temporarily fulfill this role.My main responsibility was making high level decisions. For example, when new functionality had to be implemented a decision needed to be made in which application(s) this would be implemented. Also, decisions had to be made on how applications communicate (mechanisms, functional message definitions etc.)I was able to figure out how to fill the role and how to support the team. I've been able to make high-level decisions according to the plans and facilitate the development team. Finally, I've transferred my responsibilities to the new permanent architect.
  • Ect Rotterdam (Europe Container Terminals)
    Adviser / Consultant
Ect Rotterdam (Europe Container Terminals) May 2022 - Oct 2022
ECT operates the ECT Delta Terminal on the Maasvlakte: a large and highly automated container terminal. At ICT, a team is responsible for maintaining and extending software that is involved in their day-to-day operational processes. About a year ago, ECT made new decisions about their future application landscape and a project was started to make the changes needed. Recently, ECT asked several questions about the progress and the planning for the coming years. ECT wanted to be certain the project was on schedule and they required information for budget requests for the coming years. As I had knowledge of ECT and their domain, I was asked to help as a independent adviser. My most important tasks were to answer questions about the state of the project, help to get the information needed for budget requests and work on a plan to move forward. I made a comprehensive overview of all agreements and plans made at the start and during the project. I combined this information with an estimation of the current state of the project to document the progress of the project versus the initial agreements. I came up with a way to visualize this, despite the complex nature of the available information and presented this to the stakeholders at ICT. Together with the developers, the ICT Project Manager, Product Owner, ECT project manager and other stakeholders at ECT I worked on a plan for the next steps to be taken in the project. The input delivered by me helped all parties to understand the current state of the project. Together with all stakeholders a plan was made for the next steps to be taken
  • Victaulic
    Lead Engineer Migration Dcs Platform
    Victaulic Nov 2021 - Apr 2022
Victaulic is a global manufacturer of mechanical pipe joining methods (fittings & couplings), flow control and fire protection systems. In Nazareth (Belgium) Victaulic has a Distribution Centre that is controlled by a Distribution Control System delivered by ICT more than 20 years ago. This Distribution Control System contains functionalities that would often be considered a part of a warehouse management system (WMS) or a warehouse control system (WCS)Victaulic has been satisfied with it, but in 2019 a routine security review revealed that old technologies were used, which were now unsupported. Also, the application did not meet Victaulic's current security standards. To solve these recommendations, it was decided to completely re-implement the old UI and applications, but keep the existing database so the UI and applications could be replaced in several phases to minimize the impact on production. In my role as lead engineer, I worked with the team on realizing the application and web application. I also supported the architect in the team with his tasks by detailing his high level designs. One of my most important challenges was to understand the current C++ applications that were responsible for controlling the processes and the automated cranes. Based on incomplete documentation and my analysis of the current code I created requirements and designs for new C# .NET Core microservices. I worked with the team to implement these and create a simulation of the automatic cranes to test/verify our work. A new GUI was implemented as a NodeJs React application with a .NET Core C# API backend. I was mainly involved in this part on a functional level by defining requirements and testing it.The DCS has been successfully migrated to the new technology in 7 months. With this Victaulic has a future proof DCS that will ensure a secure and safe operation.
  • Ect Rotterdam (Europe Container Terminals)
    Software Designer
Ect Rotterdam (Europe Container Terminals) Jan 2020 - Oct 2021
ECT operates the ECT Delta Terminal on the Maasvlakte: a large and highly automated container terminal. Our team is responsible for a lot of the software that is involved in their day-to-day operational processes, for example loading/discharge plans, controlling equipment and administrating container moves. Recently, ECT made new decisions about their future application landscape. This has a large impact on all applications maintained by our team, but especially the CAS application needs a lot of changes to support ECT's new architecture. I’ve been involved in meetings with the client to figure out what changes will be needed in our applications to accommodate their vision. Together with all stakeholders, I've gathered requirements, documented these and worked on the architectural designs to support these requirements. I've been involved in meetings with stakeholders to obtain budgets for some of the required changes.I was also responsible for implementing the changes required in some of our applications and coaching junior developers to make some of these changes. These changes include extending a REST API written in C# .NET Core, that exchanges data with other systems using an Oracle database. An existing application application (C++/MFC) needed to change accordingly.

    Software Designer
Ect Rotterdam (Europe Container Terminals) Jan 2015 - Dec 2019

The stacks are operated by almost 140 Automated Stacking Cranes (ASCs).At ICT, I am part of the team that maintains and optimises the software used to control this terminal. Most of the time my primary focus was CAS: Computer Aided Shipplanning. This is a software package that is used by the ship planners within ECT to create load plans for ships. CAS takes into account many variables concerning the stability of the ship and the performance of the container yard. I've also been taking part in implementing features in our other applications, coaching junior developers, and gathering requirements.I've also started and implemented many initiatives to improve our development process: implementing code reviews, adding unit tests to older applications, automated builds and changing our revision control system and version practices.
  • Hu Utrecht University Of Applied Sciences - Knowledge Centre Of Technology & Innovation
    Research Fellow
Hu Utrecht University Of Applied Sciences - Knowledge Centre Of Technology & Innovation Sep 2012 - Nov 2014
    Utrecht Area, Netherlands
As a research fellow/trainee I developed a battery management system that will allow old electric car batteries to be used as a buffer. These systems could be sold to consumers and should in the future be able to communicate with the electricity provider and each other to ensure the batteries are charged when power is cheap and abundant and sold when there is a shortage and prices are high. If enough consumers would store batteries at home, a distributed energy storage system emerges. A large energy storage capacity is a requirement to make efficient use of sustainable energy sources. This proof of concept was realised with a used Toyota Prius battery. During this project, I also supervised some student projects, checked computer vision homework assignments and gave a few lectures.

I took part in the RAAK-MKB project: "Low cost vision in Mechatronics and Robotics". This is a 2 year project in which 20+ companies and 5 universities team up to lower the cost and solve common problems within computer vision systems.I designed and implemented software to control a grid/cluster of modular production machines. The production machines used computer vision software as a sensor. Because machines and even their modules have to be be changed, added, or removed dynamically while the production grid keeps running (and producing) a lot of complicated problems had to be solved by my control software.
