I am a doctoral researcher focusing on the formulation and characterization of novel thermosetting epoxy resins for cryogenic applications. These are used as insulators in cryogenic applications such as superconducting electromagnets used in MRI's (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) as well as in particle accelerators (LHC, Geneva). The work involves synthesis and characterization of molecular building blocks as well as characterization of their behaviour during thermally induced cross-linking reactions. Finally, the mechanical properties such as toughness, strength and thermal behaviour can be measured and give insight into the intricate relationship between molecular structur and macroscopic behaviour.
