Most organizations never reach their full potential because they are over-managed but under-led and execute poorly. This is because leadership and management are not the same disciplines, and execution is a rare skill set. The role of a leader is to enable people to transform themselves, create visions of the goals that can be attained, and articulate for the followers the ways to attain these goals in a journey of continuous innovation and change. The function of a manager is virtually opposed. It typically involves maintaining strict control on existing processes, and working very hard to eliminate variability and change. Leadership is in essence transformational while management is by definition transactional. Since doing today what was done yesterday, or even doing it 10% better, is no longer a formula for stakeholders success or shareholders’ wealth, the real challenge is to combine strong leadership and strong management in order to develop collaborative leadership solutions to difficult multi-constituencies situations where managerial power alone is ineffective.
