Within the scope of my doctoral thesis I provide a complete guide for analysis geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol in all possible sources and sinks within the RAS grow-out cycle. We developed a comprehensive and sensitive GS/MS based method to quantify the off-flavours in the organic matrices RAS process water, sludge, biofilm from accessible surfaces, biochips from a nitrification biofilter (MBBR) and salmon tissue at the Environmental Chemistry Departement of eawag at the Stable Isotope Lab (PD Dr. Thomas Hofstetter).

Thesis: Off-flavours in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) producing Atlantic salmon: sources and mitigationMy doctoral project was part of an applied science-based innovation project (Innosuisse, Swiss Innovation Agency) in which we established a process, together with the Research Group Aquaculture Systems at ZHAW, to reduce and control off-flavours in the industrial RAS cultivating Atlantic salmon of Swiss Alpine Fish AG.We examined the abundance, diversity and community of geosmin producing microorganisms through molecular biological approaches (e.g. qPCR, NGS) by targeting the GSM synthase gene (geoA) in different organic samples which were collected from different compartments of a large-scale RAS grow-out for salmon cultivation (Environmental Microbiology, Prof. Dr. Mark Alexander Lever).

I manged a large multidisciplinary Innosuisse (Swiss Innovation Agency) project aimed at optimising the quality and processes of industrial land-based fish production, recruited 3 research and 2 businesspartners, led project staff , arranged working packages, chaired project meetings, monitored project budget, calculated economic success and analysed scientific output
